New imaging technology less accurate than MRI at detecting prostate cancer, trial shows

A team of researchers in Australia and New Zealand has found that MRI scans can detect prostate cancer more accurately than the newer, prostate-specific -PSMA PET/CT scanning technique.
Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET/CT scans use a radioactive dye to 'light up' areas of PSMA, which is found on the surface of prostate cancer cells. They are presently used to manage prostate cancer, as they can accurately measure the progression or recurrence of the disease. So, in this trial the researchers set out to find if they could be used to diagnose prostate cancer as well.
The PEDAL trial recruited 240 patients across five hospital groups who were at risk of prostate cancer. Every patient was given both an MRI scan and a PSMA PET/CT scan. If imaging suggested the presence of prostate cancer, a biopsy was performed by the patient's urologist.
The MRI scans picked up abnormalities in 141 patients, while the PSMA PET/CT scans picked up abnormalities in 198 patients. A total of 181 patients (75%) underwent a prostate biopsy, and subsequently 82 of those patients were found to have clinically significant prostate cancer.
Since each patient had both type of scans, the researchers could assess which type had more accurately detected those patients who had prostate cancer. The researchers found that MRI scans were significantly more accurate at detecting any grade of prostate cancer than the PSMA PET scans (0.75% for MRI vs 0.62% for PSMA PET).
"It also showed that PSMA PET/CT was not inferior to MRI in the detection of clinically significant cancers (ISUP 2 and higher); and since the ultimate goal of primary staging will be to detect only the more aggressive cancers and avoid unnecessary biopsy, this is not the end of the story."

Both are helpful, but MRI is best.
Look for a 3 Tesla MRI, which can see detail down to 1 mm. 1.5 Tesla MRIs are fairly worse, overall.

My cancer was diagnosed with a biopsy. Seems to have worked well enough.

Yes, you do, Chode. CTs are harmless and useful.
I take it you have a prostate issue as the reason behind these exams?

I had an MRI once almost 4 years ago and will NEVER get another one, It might just Kill me next time. This was taken on the 3 year anniversary of my MRI I had on my lower back when I couldn't WALK!! The next morning all my back problems were GONE, BUT all the Veins in Both legs began Glowing Bright Red and continued to do so for 3 months, then it turned into Dried Blood in the pigment of my skin that is slowly degrading. It was Both legs completely, which is what you see.It is almost gone completely now, I figure another 6 months maybe more and it will be gone. All 20-25 of the doctors that have looked at it always end up staring at me crosseyed and proceed to ask me if I have ALIENS in my Family Tree. Basically I have Magnetic Blood of an unknown origin and NOBODY has a clue as to why.

Amazing! I am sorry for your obvious issues from it, but you have identified something so unique that I would hope scientists could find out more about your condition.

The only educated guess they have is that I have an extremely High Iron content in my blood, but I don’t and if I did, I would have kidney and liver problems, and I don’t and I am in my 60’s in very good health with No problems of any kind, except my funny looking legs, which is about half or less of what that picture shows. It is slowly going away

Nope, nothing, just the tube at 3.0, but hey it Fixed my Back overnight, I literally couldn’t walk more than a 100 feet before my whole leg went numb and I either sat down or fell down. ZERO problems since that fateful day

What is “the tube” at “3.0”?
Do you mean in a 3T scanning tube?
