Mississippi teen hailed as hero after helping rescue 3 girls, officer from river

A 16-year-old boy is being hailed as a hero after he helped rescue four people when a car drove off a boat launch and into a Mississippi river.

The incident happened Sunday at around 2:30 a.m., when the car, which had three teenage girls inside, drove into the Pascagoula River in Moss Point, floated about 20 feet away from shore and started sinking, the Moss Point Police Department said in a statement.

"The driver of that vehicle stated she was following her GPS and did not realize she was going into the water," police said.

Corion Evans, 16, said he immediately ran over, took off his shoes and shirt and went into the water when he saw the car sinking and heard the three occupants shouting for help.

"I was just like, 'I can't let none of these folks die. They need to get out the water,'" Evans, a Pascagoula High School student, told Biloxi, Mississippi, ABC affiliate WLOX. "So, I just started getting them. I wasn't even thinking about nothing else."

Shades of Michael Scott.

Water rescue without any equipment is inherently dangerous. A nearby angel must have been watching over this brave young man.

Never fully trust GPS while driving. Although not encountering problems recently, some years ago GPS has given me wrong information about roads and waterways. Other people have died at night going into the water due to GPS directions.

There are three ways in and out of our subdivision, but when the GPS cars drove through, they didn't map the back way in and out.   There is a very sharp S curve cut through about 120 feet long between two streets, but it doesn't exist on the GPS mapping.   Trees along the streets blocked seeing one street from the other until one lot was cleared at the end of last year.

As usual, omitting the whole story. This was completely discussed here a week or so ago.

The guy was being questioned by police when he fled, jumped a wall and a barricade (that was there because that part of the river is dangerous) and then jumped into the river. He swam out quite a distance, then apparently got into distress and started calling for help.

The officers had no rescue equipment and no water rescue training, so they radioed for the rescue squad. The guy went under almost immediately and all the rescue squad could do was recover the body.

Nothing requires an officer with no lifeguard/water training and no rescue equipment to enter dangerous water to rescue a man who deliberately jumped in to escape arrest. I'm a WSI/BSA/RC lifeguard, and I would not have jumped in after the man with no equipment, certainly not have executed a series of surface dives in a muddy river. "Reach-row-throw- only then go." And only if you're not likely to wind up with a double drowning.

“As usual”

As usual. What else to expect? After all you read one post.. you can tell.

Lol @ “here.” Where are you that I'm not? Discussed doesn't mean resolved as you see it.

You're contentious, not persuasive.

Nevertheless, XOXO to American moms everywhere and everyday! But today.. especially you!

As I was starting down the page of comments, I was thinking “please let him be Black.”

I don't understand why even some conservatives have started capitalizing the word "black" just like the leftists started doing a couple years ago.
