As Alabamians wait for more news about the status of reproductive health care in the state, the most recent data from the Alabama Department of Public Health sheds light on who recently received an abortion in the state.
As of June 24, essentially all abortions are banned in Alabama. The state’s law only allows exceptions when the life of the mother is at risk.
While the former abortion clinics adjust to the state’s new law, residents are left with many questions. Following the leak of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health in May, abortions increased in Alabama after declining for a decade.
With abortion out of the question for almost everyone in the state, Alabama’s reproductive health landscape — and plan to increase maternal and infant care to accommodate more expected births — remains unclear.
Nearly 7,500 Alabama residents received abortions in 2020.
Combined, the state’s five clinics provided 5,713 abortions, with most occurring early in the first trimester. More than 82% of abortions were performed at 10 weeks or earlier; about half were medication abortions.
Most people who received abortions in Alabama were parents already — more than 5,000 residents had had at least one live birth prior to their procedure. Almost 4,500 had never received a previous abortion.
More than 66% of Alabama residents who received abortions in 2020 were Black, while almost 30% were white.

May they hear echoes of their murdered children in the laughter of every child till they repent.
That is a so sad. I can see first time pregnant women fooling themselves into the “it’s just tissue” BS, but women who already have a child know darn well that they are killing their own children.
It’s a really sad state of civilization that women are so calloused and disconnected from motherhood.
Im sick of hearing that women who get abortions are innocent victims. I do sympathize with young girls who face pressure from parents or boyfriends. That said, if you’re an adult and especially if you’ve had a child, you know exactly what you are doing.
It’s no matter
The USSC determined that the ruling in 1973 providing legal cover to women to have abortions was not constitutional
Anyone who gets what a marital annulment is gets this
All the studies in the world, all the protests, nastiness, misguided offenses against churches are not going to change this.
It’s not like the fight of the past 50 years has reversed. It’s that it is over
Even adult women get pressure from parents, boyfriends or husbands.
Public schools have been teaching about overpopulation and how burdensome children are since I was in school in the 70’s.
As a result, children are abused, trafficked, murdered before and after birth at a really alarming rate these days.
Women need to stop blaming men for the actions of women.
I prefer the word lynching to abortion. It has that same powerlessness-while-authorities-stand-around-you feeling, only more clearly.
And vice versa.
Abortion as birth control, family planning, or sex selection is destroying the value of life. How did Americans get to this point of depravity?
