Thousands reportedly hospitalized, 5 dead from Uzbekistan unrest

Sultanbek Ziyayev, the head of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, told news website Daryo.uz that hospitals in Nukus were full of patients who had been wounded when protesters clashed with security forces.

“Thousands of wounded have been hospitalized and are being treated,” he said, according to the website.

Photographs from Nukus published on Sunday by another news website, Kun.uz, showed street barricades, burned trucks and a heavy military presence including armored personnel carriers.

Uzbekistan is a tightly controlled former Soviet republic where the government clamps down hard on any form of dissent. It was the second outbreak of unrest in Central Asia this year, after Kazakhstan crushed mass protests in January and Russia and other former Soviet republics sent in troops to help the authorities restore order.

The protests in Uzbekistan were prompted by planned constitutional changes that would have stripped Karakalpakstan of its autonomous status. In an about-turn, the president dropped those plans on Saturday.

Ahunov, chairman of the opposition Berlik party, told Reuters from Sweden that he condemned the use of lethal force.

He said he feared the potential for the situation to escalate into an ethnic conflict between Uzbeks and Karakalpaks, a minority group with their own language.

Why does news like this, or the farmers protesting in the Netherlands, get practically no coverage in American media? What are they afraid of and why?

Maybe the CIA is fomenting the unrest in these ex-Soviet block countries to further pressure Russia.

That unrest may cut into the flourishing tourist traffic in that mecca of vacation fun. Don’t forget your hijab.
But kids can have free bullet proof backpacks and families can choose between a box of ammo or a case of beef jerky as a sing in gift at several motels.

No, why would you ever believe that? Personally, I don’t believe the CIA serves America and it’s people. I believe they serve the bankers and the elites on both sides of the pond.

Nobody cares? Maybe they should. I pay some attention to BBC and have not seen anything on the farmers Netherlands protests.
We have another tragic shooting incident here and that will consume all news coverage.
Mean while Haiti is dropping into chaos not that far from our shores (as an aside is there any country Clinton and Bush intervened in that is better off today?), not to mention Nicaragua.

Shootings get maximum coverage here because of the political capital they have. The media considers bashing dissidents to be a public service, and gun owners are dissidents.

I find it strange that thousands of people can be injured but only 5 fatally in a govt crackdown.

What happened in this Krapastan is no interest of ours, like virtually everything else abroad that is published by our war whore media.
