Electron Volt

a unit of energy equal to the work done on an electron in accelerating it through a potential difference of one volt.

A Volt measures the energy per unit charge . The electron volt multiples that by an electrons charge which gives you a unit of energy . In this case the energy it takes bring a single electron up to one volt.
