The question now is whether Magnus Carlsen, the current world chess champion, will agree to play against Nepomniatchchi or will decline.
If Magnus declines, then the second place finisher in this tournament will challenge Ian for the WCC.
Challengers include Hikaru Nakamura, Ding Liren, Teimour Radjabov and Fabiano Caruana.

With his win over Duda today, Nakamura moved to 7 1/2. Ding's draw with Firouzja left Ding at 7. Ding and Naka play each other in tomorrow's final round (with Ding having the white pieces). With Radjabov and Caruana each at 6 1/2, second place must go either to Naka or Ding.
An impressive performance for Naka, who'd "retired" from professional chess, played at the classical time control, a couple of years ago to become a full-time "streamer." Naka has certainly enhanced his online brand as a consequence of his comeback in this Candidates.

I beat someone who beat Kasparov.

Seems to me that Magnus won’t be able to resist thumping Nepo again.
Back in college I played quite a bit. Beat the Florida state champion and a bunch of pilots from the Persian Air Force. Never was rated above 1860 or so.
Not sure but I do not think that there is a 6 degrees of Kasparov in chess rankings.
Ding verses Hikaru tomorrow will be a hard fought game.

I’ve had a similar experience with my new novelty playing White in the Caro-Khan: The Nimzo-Glymph Flying Knight Attack, which is basically a Queen’s Indian Bishop Pawn Declined with the colors reversed .. .

It’s disappointing that Nepo won the tournament. He got stomped in the last world championship match. I’d have much rather seen anyone else be the challenger. And I hope Carlsen decides to keep playing. World Champion should be the best, and Carlsen is definitely that.

Yes, if Naka holds for second place, he will have definitely earned it. Ding's play has been a bit erratic in this tournament, but at least he's shown that he can win games.
For me, Caruana has been more of a disappointment. He still hasn't been able to recapture his 2018 form, for some reason.
Caruana was playing so well, and I was looking forward to a Nepo-Carauana showdown.
And Ding earned my appreciation for excellent play. And then a silly blunder or two.
Today, Nepo is playing as close to Carlsen as anyone anywhere.

Nowadays we leave off the “p-”. Pawns are so limited in their movement that there is seldom a need to specify which one moved, except in the cases of a two pawns guarding or attacking a square. Otherwise pretty much the same.
I played at least a half dozen games daily for a few years in the 70’s. It came to an end when the Shah was disposed by Jimmy Carter State Dept and the Frogs, and my favorite competitors suddenly departed for parts unknown.
So I went back to assembly language ... a very poor substitute.

I used to play in the Denver chess club. Got to play Victor Korchnoi in a simul. Was great, got to play him and get my score sheet signed by him and shake his hand, at the time it was before he was to play for world champ, he lost, but still #2. Hope Magnus does play. Thanks for the post!
