I suspect government nosey types are behind some Internet companies, but in the case of Amazon I suspect Bezos is a smart guy with technical, financial and marketing knowledge who presents well to people that have to invest money.
Bezos lineage is weirdly not readily available. there are people that have tried to deep dive it and come up with some interesting things but who knows if they are right.
