I was told by an at the time active SEAL that they go down to the range daily and go thru 500-1500 rounds, generally practicing point shooting, as this is a perishable skill that they MUST have.
For normal people once a month should keep you sharp enough striking a good balance between time and cost required and skills you need.
Too many people do not do beyond the minimum to keep their carry permit.

In the good old days, you might be able to do that many rounds weekly.
Now, if you go to the range and fire off 2 boxes you feel like you just blew off $100+.
