Where to move in retirement?

Posted on 07/02/2022 7:41:27 AM PDT by LouAvul

I'm in Oklahoma and appreciate the politics (Constitutional Carry; outlawed abortion) but don't like the weather.

I've lived in Florida, Ohio, Alabama, North Carolina, Michigan, Indiana, Tennessee, Kentucky and California. I like the weather in Michigan and California but don't like the politics.

I'd like milder summers and can handle cold winters. Long spring and fall weather is good.

Retirement age and all, so good medicine is important.

By the time we make the move (~2 to 3 years, likely) whatever adjustment the housing market will make will be done. Don't anticipate having to finance anything, etc.

Also, I'm a firearms "accumulator." Carry concealed 90% of the time and that's important. Constitutional firearms laws are always important.

What says the FR braintrust?

Maybe get an RV, 5TH WHEELER and travel and live wherever the seasons you like take you. Do that for a year and see if anything you find during that time would be a place to land.

Other than that, southern east Ohio near West Virginia. Beautiful country.

Be prepared for more expensive real estate than OK. I know real estate has zoomed up in OK but the below are going to be greater all thing being equal.

1. Tennessee in or along the western slope of the Appalachian Mountains. Also, along the I-40 corridor between Knoxville and Ashville, NC.

2. If you like the living on the lake lifestyle, there are terrific lakes on the Tennessee River from northern Alabama to near Knoxville. Still in tornado country especially in northern Alabama.

3. The southern half of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. Roanoke and Blacksburg would be excellent matches to your criteria. Appalachian Mountains to the west and Blue Ridge Mountains to the east usually blunt the extremes of winter and summer weather.

4. North Carolina side of the Appalachian Mountains. Overall, less intrusion by civilization than the Tennessee side. Georgia mountains to the south are pretty nice as well although more developed than most of NC region. Major medical services within the mountains can be distant except for Ashville.

I’m a retired Okie living outside Murphy, NC in a mountain cabin.

If you like the cold winters, Constitutional Carry, No State Income Tax, No State Sales tax, good medical access ... .New Hampshire is nice.

You have the beaches in the summer and then a 1 1/2 to 2 hour drive up north to the mountains.

Check the south-eastern part.

“Well you beat me to Prescott. Friend moved there two years ago and put it on my radar.”

The Quad City area (Prescott, Prescott Valley, Dewey, and Chino Valley) is still rural but we do have a Costco, Trader Joes, Best Buy, three Walmart, two Home Depot, Lowes, two Cal Ranch Stores, Lowes, and 15 independent gun stores. Plus two hospitals and enough medical specialists that you don’t have to drive down to Phoenix for most cases.

55% of the voters are Republicans.

Thank you. We originally thought we might go to the Florida panhandle because I LOVE the beaches there. However, on our last trip there we decided it was too touristy to live there year round.

I’m looking for 4 seasons. I enjoy the snow, but don’t need it to last until May. I’m a native Floridian, so looking for Spring to come closer to the calendar than when we get it here. I love the outdoors. We hike and kayak some. Not experienced but can learn. We just don’t have the water around us here to practice in, but we would love to get better. Also canoeing if that’s an option.

We are in pretty great health right now, but also know that as we get older that can change, so prefer to have good healthcare available. We have a great system where we are now.

Also we need to have decent access to an airport. We live near Indy now, and only have a 35-40 minute drive to get there. It would be nice to keep the drive to an hour or less if that were possible, Our kids live from coast to coast now so that’s our main mode of transportation for visits to them.

We will keep looking in the SE Tennessee areas. Hoping we can find something affordable with a few acres if at all possible. I like the peace and quiet.

I can no longer stand the cold (used to love it). Never liked the heat with humidity. I’m thinking winters in southern Az and summers in Montana.

Yup a future snow bird.

How about Reno, Nevada? Close to Lake Tahoe, plus good gun laws and no state income tax.

Make politics your lowest priority. Consider family, weather, cost of living, things you like to be around.

Where I live now I bought 13 and a half acres for 30K, on the side of a rocky mountain. End of a dead end road. Bought a 14X40 cabin to put on it and added a 10X16 bedroom. We overlook about a 300 acre hayfield. We also built a wrap around porch. The only noise we hear is birds in the daytime and crickets and owls at night. We are about 6 miles from town for groceries and drug store and about 40 miles from chattanooga, and 40 miles from huntsville.and about a hundred to nashville.
