I'm in Oklahoma and appreciate the politics (Constitutional Carry; outlawed abortion) but don't like the weather.
I've lived in Florida, Ohio, Alabama, North Carolina, Michigan, Indiana, Tennessee, Kentucky and California. I like the weather in Michigan and California but don't like the politics.
I'd like milder summers and can handle cold winters. Long spring and fall weather is good.
Retirement age and all, so good medicine is important.
By the time we make the move (~2 to 3 years, likely) whatever adjustment the housing market will make will be done. Don't anticipate having to finance anything, etc.
Also, I'm a firearms "accumulator." Carry concealed 90% of the time and that's important. Constitutional firearms laws are always important.

From the out of state license plates I’m seeing in just my town alone.....it ain’t working.
And where I live isn’t all THAT desirable.....at least it didn’t used to be.

It’s interesting to see the various replies to this.
It all seems to depend on the criteria by which people judge the different places they are considering.
It seems that many are looking for small town or rural areas to live in. And many are trying to avoid places with extreme weather, either winter or summer. Many are looking for areas with lower costs of living/housing than found in most larger metro areas.
Retirement opens up new possibilities for many of us.

Leaky, Texas area is very tolerable and hardly humid..
We’re in Maricopa, halfway between Phoenix and Tucson. Hate the summers but it’s bearable if you take short vacations to break up the monotony of the heat or hang out in a pool as much as possible. Even so, no place I’d rather be than AZ.

But was filmed largely on the Chattooga, at least the water scenes. The Chattooga is the border between GA and SC just a little SW of where they meet NC.
I white water rafted it several times years ago in guided trips. The good guides would point out where Sodomy Creek was located, which rapid they lost the boat full of very expensive camera gear, etc.

Dang, I suppose if you can get around that name, I suppose you’re OK. Why is is called “Leaky” and what do you like about the area?

Install a steam shower or sauna in your house. That gets every bit of the cold out of your bones. That and in-floor radiant heating makes life comfortable for old bones.
My buddy recommends TN.
He’s 70 and loves it.
He’s in Middleton.
He also says don’t go near Memphis.

I was born and raised in Toledo before moving to Michigan 34 years ago. Had family in Swanton/ Berkey area (Fulton County). We loved the Amish country area of Millersburg, Sugarcreek as well.
South east Ohio is beautiful, like God’s country.
The best way to describe it is God’s Country. I live on the outskirts of a small town in NE Alabama. Wonderful people. If you are looking, I would suggest finding a place to rent anywhere in the area and start exploring the area. You got mountains, hills and valleys. Lakes and the Tennessee river and many creeks running into it. I am A Texas transplant and lived there for the work, not a lot of high dollar employment around here in this area so prices on real estate is very reasonable. If you do your homework and know how to find off market property, you can make a hell of a deal.
Loads of shopping and everything a big city might have with no traffic jams. . ...State-Park with huge lake and all just 20 minutes away....Largely Republican thank God.
Weather we get all four seasons. People mind their own business but ready to help if needed. Low crime rate, mostly domestic and DUI’s ....Neighbor if you want or not, it's fine either way because your neighbors know you are there.
Baseball stadium brings in the nationals. Lots of busing if needed. But all of it with a country flair. I couldn't imagine a better pace to be.

10 years ago a lot of places in the Midwest, beautiful considerations, however there was a meth lab problem in the midwest at that time and a couple of guys I know that retired moved out west out to the Midwest and told me that they were fortunate but there was some areas out there in Farmland that were dangerous territory.
I ended up around the Chesapeake Bay which isn’t too bad but it wasn’t my ideal thought, of course the grass is always greener...
If I was to move out west it would be on the western side of the Gulf of Mexico because then you’re not in the tornado or hurricane areas that are fed off of the Gulf of Mexico’s nice juicy air.
I lived in or near cities most of my life....now in a rural tiny city...has everything here a big city would have just no traffic jams an all the headaches. Rednecks and townies get along well here because it’s a community of mostly Republicans. Love their country.
In 2 or three miles your in the country side.....so it’s the best of all worlds.
My family members who’ve visited now understand what a great place this is.
Go for it...country living is not boring!
