‘Stranger Things’ Season Four Breaks Nielsen Streaming Secord
NME ^ | 1st July 2022 | Adam Starkey

The show amassed 7.2 billion minutes of viewing time in one week

Stranger Things season four has broken a US streaming record for minutes watched within a single week.

According to Nielsen (via The Hollywood Reporter), the Netflix series racked up 7.2 billion minutes of viewing time for the week of May 30 to June 5. This is the highest weekly total for any streaming title since Nielsen’s weekly rankings began almost two years ago.

Stranger Things also holds the biggest two-week tally for any streaming show, achieving 5.14 billion minutes of viewing when season four released in the week of May 23-29, for a two-week total of 12.34 billion minutes.

The record for the most minutes watched within a single week was previously held by Netflix documentary series Tiger King and Ozark in the spring of 2020, who both topped 5 billion minutes during the coronavirus pandemic.

Nielsen’s figures count all episodes of the series, although it’s likely the majority of the 7.2 billion minutes came from the first seven episodes of season four, released on May 27.

The final two episodes of season four, including a finale that’s two hours and 20 minutes in length, arrived on Netflix today (July 1).

Netflix announced earlier this year that Stranger Things would conclude with season five, teasing spin-offs are already in development.

Speaking to NME about the show’s end, co-creator Matt Duffer said: “We do have an end. I’m sure a lot of it’s going to change, but now [it’s] the end. It’s just one of those things that you come up with and you go, ‘That’s it, that’s right, that’s inevitable – that’s what it has to be.”

The final season will be different in pace too, picking up directly after season four. “Typically in the previous seasons, everything wraps up in a nice bow,” Matt added. “Four and five are really [connected] together.

“[With five], there’ll be no wind-up time – like even this season, you get to experience the kids and what they’re going through in high school before things start to escalate. Then it gets crazier and crazier and crazier – that’s typically the trajectory. Five you’re just going to be right in the middle of it so it’s going to feel very, very different.”

I know it’s Netflix folks, but this show is absolutely amazing. I mean, this was my childhood (without the monsters, evil pysch doctors, and gov’t spooks, of course) growing up in the 80s. I’ve only watched through season 2 until I got rid of Netflix, but I will definitely buy the series when it comes out on Blu-Ray.

We thought that the earlier seasons were clever. But season 4 seemed flat.

I really don’t like the monster stuff but despite that I find myself “strangely” addicted to this show. The kids are charming and there is enough of a plot to keep you guessing.

So I understand the popularity even if I don’t appreciate the monsters. I think the younger generation just loves the scary stuff.

Season 1 was great, Season 2 was okay, Season 3 was a dumpster fire, Season 4 moved back towards okay.

And after Cobra Kai season five, I’m dumping Netflix. I’m in the process of scooping up used DVDs of the shows I used to like to watch on Netflix. Picked up seasons 1 through 4 of Dexter used for about $13 this evening.

"‘Stranger Things’ Season Four Breaks Nielsen Streaming Secord"

A certain sign of desperation for something to do.

Streaming Secord?

That is a stranger thing.

For a secord there, I thought it must be a typo.

I agree about season 4 feeling flat. I suspect some of that was production delays from stupid covid nonsense. I also didn’t find the villain very compelling.

I just don’t get the appeal of this series. Tried it 3 times but it’s just another Saturday morning kids show to me.

I tried watching it once and didn’t get the appeal.

I would be interested to know what you find engaging about it.

My wife and I just discovered the show about a week ago and have been watching multiple episodes every night.

It does an amazing job capturing what the world is like from the kids' perspective and, being only several years older than the older kids, it really captures the lost world of America in the early to mid 80s.

It's very hard to do both well, and then they add very well done suspense from the horror/sci-fi element. It just sucked us in despite the fact that the horror elements are preposterous.

The show perfectly encapsulated the 80’s and is very fun and exciting to watch. It hits on all of the movies and themes of the 80’s and brings them back in a fun and exciting way.

If you don’t like Stranger Things, then you’ll probably not a fan of Sci Fi or suspense.

It's an acquired taste, like Breaking Bad was.

I like it because that was my childhood growing up. I grew up in the 80s, so that's totally me.
