A 'gesture of goodwill': That was how the Kremlin tried to play off its retreat from Ukraine's Snake Island on Thursday, after commanders gave up hope of holding the strategic spit of land under withering artillery fire.
It is the same phrase that Putin's lackeys used to try and cover up their ignominious retreat from Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy back in early April, as the first phase of their war in Ukraine spectacularly failed.
But those are far from the only battlefield blunders to have left Russia's red army red-faced: From an early defeat trying to take Hostomel airfield to failed river crossings in the Donbas and the sinking of flagship Moskva, there have been plenty of embarrassing moments for Putin and his commanders.
Here, MailOnline takes a look back at all the defeats that have shamed what was once considered to be the world's second-best military...

Odessa is a beautiful city from what I read. The barbaric Rooskies should never get their filthy hands on it. The Bee Gees wrote a song about Odesssa

Plus, Odessa being strategic, as the port that Ukrainian grain gets shipped out of. Ukrainians are the best wheat farmers in the world or among the best. This what Satan-Putin wants to destroy.
It was American Lend Lease that destroyed Germany in WW2.
Some US military products rely on parts from overseas, but none from Russia that I am aware of. Most semiconductors used in military products are from US sources, although some of the US vendors use overseas contractors, or resources in friendly nations like Germany or Japan.
What chip do you think is sourced in China that is used in a US military weapons application?
Boy these Putler fan-boi’s really are dumber than they sound!
What won WWII was America’s gigantic industrial, technological, and financial power, which dwarfed all others combined. (The USA economy was (and still is today) larger than all of the Axis nations combined, and larger than UK, France, and Soviet Union combined.)
Even Stalin said so: “Without American machines, the war could not have been won.”
The Soviet Union depended upon US-supplied rail equipment to move its soldiers and US-suppled trucks to move the war. Russian soldiers STILL fed upon US supplied canned food for 40 years after the war ended.
It was America’s air force and bombs which destroyed most of Germany. The Soviet Union’s artillery shelling was minor by comparison.
You are dumber and more delusional than Putler. Fortunately, smarter people will always be around to destroy those delusional fantasies.
