Vitamin D supplements may offset bone loss caused by diabetes drug

Vitamin D supplementation may help offset damaging bone loss that occurs in some people who take canagliflozin, a commonly prescribed diabetes drug.

A class of diabetes drug called SGLT2 inhibitors has been shown to slow the progression of diabetes-related kidney disease and is increasingly being considered as a first-line treatment option for people with diabetes who have a high risk for developing kidney and heart disease. However, some studies have found SGLT inhibitors to negatively affect bone health by accelerating loss of bone mineral density and hampering the activation of vitamin D by the body. The combination of these events can increase the risk of bone fracture. Researchers hypothesize that people who already have lower-than-normal levels of vitamin D have an even higher risk of bone loss and possible fracture when taking SGLT2 inhibitors.

The research team studied adults from an Amish community in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The researchers explained they chose this population due to the availability of extensive genetic sequencing data, but also because, unlike commercially processed milk, the farm-fresh milk many people in the Amish community drink is not fortified with vitamin D. Therefore, it is more likely that Amish people consume less vitamin D from their diet than the general population in the U.S.

The volunteers—some of whom were found to have preexisting low vitamin D levels—took canagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor, for five days before and after they were given vitamin D supplements. The researchers found that in people who were vitamin D-deficient, canagliflozin led to a significant decrease (31%) in the levels of a metabolite used to measure vitamin D levels, but a much smaller decrease (7%) in those with normal vitamin D status. The supplements then boosted levels of parathyroid hormone, which regulates calcium levels in the blood and vitamin D levels in the bones.

This is a little intriguing, because the Amish do spend a fair amount of time outside, which should help them make Vitamin D.

However, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that a medicine could make the body have a dysfunction.

If you take D3, try to make sure to take it with vitamin K2. Helps to get the D3 into the right places, not mineralizing into muscles and arteries.

“If you take D3, try to make sure to take it with vitamin K2.”

I’m with you, and along with Zinc, are my daily preventative intake. People are still confused on K2 for EITHER/BOTH MK4 or MK7, and I buy mY k2 with BOTH mk4 AND mk7. I only learned about K2 when a friend of mine got injured with the vaxx, and K2 sort of alleviated it. He feels fine after many months of doing this..

Interesting...

I was on the drug carbamazepine for 20 years to control my complex partial seizures. During the last few years I was on it before I switched to other drugs, I developed moderate to heavy arthritis in my hands and feet, and my head got VERY HOT at night - I did not know why. I would drench my head in cold water, so I can go back to sleep.

When I switched over two other seizure meds, the hot head disappeared - it was likely due to being on carbamazepine for so long (allergy?). And carbamazepine is now known to degrade Vitamin D, which I now take supplements to slow down the condition.

Surprisingly, when carbamazepine was first marketed in 1960, it was not known it destroys vitamin D until 60 years later...
