My dad was an Eagle Scout. 42 merit badges. Order of the Arrow. I became in Eagle Scout in April 1972. Age 15...still getting around on bicycle. My middle son joined a troop and had earned First Class before the first Court of Honor was scheduled. The Scoutmaster said he should "slow down". Huge mistake. He left Scouts and concentrated on his AP classes, tutoring AP students and the band. He earned a "5" on all the AP exams. He has a low tolerance for arbitrary limits.

My time and my son's time in Scouts occurred in San Diego County. The Scouts maintained a large camp in Balboa Park including a swimming pool open to the public. The also had an area in the Mission Bay parks (Fiesta Island?). The gays in San Diego relentlessly attacked the Scouts usage of Balboa Park in their quest to put gay scouts and scoutmasters in place. The same was occurring at the national level. It was clear that the linguine spined national leadership would cave. They did. The consequence was the LDS Church dumped the BSA as the primary young men's activity. That gutted the BSA membership and budgets. BSA also had a long list of lawsuits from scouts subjected to sexual predators allowed into the scout leadership. Settlement of those claims has forced a selloff of assets including scout camps across the country.

BSA is a morally corrupt organization. It's a sad demise for an organization that helped young men acquire useful life skills. It has been co-opted in a way that make it unfit for support by parents of young men. Find a better alternative.

Gee, when I was a Scout it was all about developing leadership skills, survival techniques, camping, meritorious tasks, giving back to the community and pride in the troop and nation.
Now? It’s just plain “Pride” and grotesque parades.
