Just a few weeks ago, I finished reading a book written in 1946 called "I Chose Freedom" by Victor Kravchenko. The book was the story of a Soviet who was born in Tsarist Russia, grew up during the Bolshevik revolution, became an accomplished Soviet Communist Party Member and competent Industrialist, and became so crushed and horrified by what he saw that he defected to the West.

He was tasked to take part out of college in the collectivization of the Kulaks, and by his account, took the humane approach and was respected by the Kulaks for it. (Again, his account, but I believe his account)

His account of Stalin's Show Trials was that people in the Soviet Union knew exactly what was going on. They knew EXACTLY. But nobody could say it. The way that the Communists had turned people against each other using fear, was brilliantly effective. Nobody could trust anyone else, even family members.

When people discussed the trials, they had to mouth the words the party needed to hear. To do otherwise meant a knock on the door and disappearance to a Gulag or a bullet in the head or heart right outside or inside of town.

But they knew exactly what was what.

And every person who talked to others saw it in their eyes and heard it in their voices that they knew what was what.

Everyone knew.

But as the quote above points out with the "For American Communists and fellow travelers, the charges and confessions were all genuine" quote, it was as true then as it is now, and for much the same reasons.
