A Taliban interior spokesman said attackers had laden a car with explosives but it had detonated before reaching its target.
A temple official, Gornam Singh, said there were around 30 people inside the building at the time.
A spokesman for Kabul's commander said one Sikh worshipper had been killed in the attack and one Taliban fighter was killed as his forces took control of the area.

Sikhs are very nice people, at least the Sikhs I’ve met. Many Seattle cab drivers are Sikhs, polite and helpful. I was in downtown Seattle one afternoon, missed the bus to a very important ophthalmology appointment when a Sikh driver pulled over and picked me up, refused to take any money from a stranded woman.
Funny how IS is back now that Democrats are running foreign policy.
This event begs the question: Do they really have the balls to mess with the Sikhs?
Indeed, I had a good friend in college who was Sikh.
From my own experience with him but also others, Sikhs are generally good people.
There WAS that terror incident, however. Blew up an airplane long ago.
Otherwise, though, do not confuse them with Moslems of any stripe.
You’ll notice Moslems never smile, are angry like all the time. Likewise, with the turbans…Sikh men ALWAYS wear them, while various Moslem men don’t. And Sikhs always are neat and clean….compared to Moslem turbans of any kind, which tend to be dirty and disheveled.
ISIS versus the Taliban over who gets to dominate Afghanistan. Neither side will win while Afghans end up losing again.
I’ve met some Muslim men and found them OK. Have seen some who here in Spokane were jerks though. Don’t recall any who wore turbans, but some whose wives were covered from head to toe.
Went to Turkey many years ago, and Muslim men there were quite nice. That was prior to Erdogan, who essentially wrecked Istanbul by bringing in hundreds of thousands of unsophisticated country people. When I went, it was extremely rare to see a veiled woman in Istanbul. Perhaps saw two or three during the week I was there. And the men were perfectly charming to me, the veil-free foreigner.
