Volkswagen unveiled their new all-electric ID. Buzz van. With a strong resemblance to VW’s iconic Bulli or “Bus”, the ID. Buzz can be optioned with parking, lane changing and partial driving assistance. Standard on the ID. Buzz is ‘Front Assist’, the emergency braking function. The upcoming ID.  “In the 1950s, the Volkswagen Bulli stood for a new feeling of automotive freedom, independence and great emotion,” said Ralf Brandstätter, chairman of the board of management of Volkswagen Passenger Cars. “The ID. Buzz picks up on this lifestyle and transfers it into our time: emission-free, sustainable, fully networked and now ready for the next big chapter: autonomous driving.”

The ID. Buzz has a 77 kWh lithium ion battery that provides current to the 150 kW electric motor that drives the rear axle. Using a 11 kW alternating current the ID Buzz can be charged at home but with a CCS plug connector at a direct-current rapid-charging station the charging power increases to as much as 170 kW. With a DC charging station the battery can be charged from 5 percent to 80 percent in approximately 30 minutes.

Bidirectional charging allows the ID. Buzz to give unneeded energy from the battery into the customer’s home network. The power transfer takes place via a DC bi-directional wall boz. 

With space for five people, the ID. Buzz has fold-down second row seats for expanded cargo space and if a consumer needs the van for commercial endeavors the ID. Buzz Cargo can be loaded up with a pair of euro pallets. 

“The ID. Buzz is timeless, sustainable and yet also extremely functional – that makes it unique,” said Jozef Kabaň, head of Volkswagen Design.

Squinting to see all the buttons and dials that need to be pushed on a touch screen, yet having a TV is illegal. There oughta be a law. In the old days, things were meant to be adjusted without hardly taking your eyes off the road, I guess that was too mundane.

For most of enviro complainers they can have their overpriced EVs. The rest of will make the move to more functional EVs and hybrids 2 or 3 decades from now.

Greatest vehicle devised by the mind of man. An aesthetic of pure utility originally designed post war by a Dutch team contracted by VW. I drove my Combi “Lulu” for almost 40 years, after previously owning 2 Combis, a double cab pickup, a single cab pickup, and a double cargo door model, all pre-1968 split window. I rebuilt 7 motors for Lulu and replaced the tranny twice. We had adventures on dirt road cow tracks across the western continent, in the Mojave Desert, snow blizzards in Oregon, and camping trips galore. Brakes went out on July 4, 2013 and rear ended a pickup truck and clonked a telephone utility box off its foundation. I was in mourning for weeks. Best friend I ever had.

So I got the credentials to call this EV monstrosity an abomination erupted from the bowels of Hell. :)

What’s wild is that, as I’m sure you know, they produced those VW vans in South America until ten or so years ago. Still basically the original design!
