Hoping no one will bother to drill my gas tank. I drive a very small car for daily activities in town. I filled up today and it took only 5 gallons.

Static electricity, or sparks caused by the friction from the drill bit against the gas tank are most likely to blame for the spontaneous combustion of the gas. “Spontaneous combustion” must have a different definition in Britain.

Maybe we should burn him at the stake. The gas is too valuable to use this way.

I’d like to report a robbery- I stopped at a gas station, filled up, and the pump’s electronic console took all my money

We are turning into Soviet Russia. Back in the day they had to remove their windshield wipers when they parked.

That’s right. The windshield wiper factory was broken and no one knew how to fix it.
Same with toilet seats. There were none in the restaurant bathrooms. They stole them. The toilet seat factory was broken and no one knew how to fix it.

I don’t know what that was; but it was plumb weird to me. Your thoughts?

No, the guy wasn’t a “victim” who was just seeking some relief from high gas prices.
He was an opportunist who thought he could profit at everyone else’s expense.
So he got hurt trying to hurt others?
My sympathy meter is broke.

“Spontaneous combustion” must have a different definition in Britain.
English has multiple definitions for everything. The other definition was famously employed by Dickens in”Bleak House”, and in the movie “This is Spinal Tap”. It doesn’t get any more British than that.

The hilarity is that the utility van is actually branded, no emblazoned with "Byrd's Fire Protection" on its sides.

Gasoline theft happened in the 1970’s too. I recall my father buying locking gas caps for all our vehicles.
Energy crisis back then led to:
Reduced freeway speeds to 55
Temperature recommendations for homes of 72/68
Locking gas caps
Fuel rationing on even/odd days

I totally forgot about them until I read your post. Wow! My 1982 VW Rabbit had a locking gas cap. That car was a real P.O.S.
