Buzz Lightyear (voice of Chris Evans) is best friends with Alisha Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba), a lesbian character in a same-sex relationship in the Disney/Pixar film “Lightyear,” which has been banned in territories in the Middle East and Asia.
Disney and Pixar Animation Studios’ decision to refuse to re-edit or alter depiction of a same-sex relationship in the new film “Lightyear” is continuing to reverberate — and those repercussions now include a ban on the film’s release in territories in the Middle East and West Asian territories.
This week, decision makers in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Malaysia were among those that confirmed that the $200 million film would be banned.
“Lightyear,” the Emeryville studio’s first theatrical release since March 2020, is set to open in the United States and other major territories on Friday, June 17. A subplot near the beginning of the film involves Buzz Lightyear’s fellow space ranger and best friend, Alisha Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba), and her relationship with a colleague, who becomes her wife. At one point, the couple kiss onscreen.
The film’s ban is the latest in a monthslong debate over LGBTQ themes in Disney films, a “controversy” that exasperates “Lightyear” director Angus MacLane.
“The controversy is whether or not you think it’s appropriate for people to love each other,” MacLane told The Chronicle before the Middle East and Asian bans were announced. “That’s a thing that’s a controversy? I don’t know where to begin on that one. What is important to us is to have these characters that were fully formed and essential to the film.”
Also before the bans, actor Chris Evans, who voices Buzz Lightyear, told Variety, “It’s tough to not be a little frustrated that it even has to be a topic of discussion. That it is this kind of ‘news.’ The goal is that we can get to a point where it is the norm, and that this doesn’t have to be some uncharted waters, that eventually this is just the way it is. That representation across the board is how we make films.”
Pixar did not respond to a Chronicle request on Wednesday, June 15, for comment on the bans.
“isney and other studios regularly re-edit films to conform with local censorship laws around the world to avoid outright bans. That was the plan with “Lightyear” as well, until an open letter in March by “the LGBTQIA+ employees of Pixar, and their allies” criticized Di
“With that “reasoning” practically anything goes.”
With animation, think of the relationships Disney can have with horses or dogs since it is just about love. /s
I cancelled our Disney subscription to never renew. No plans ever to take the Grandkids to Disneyland or a movie. Disneyland, I suspect, will become a weird sex park in the end.
I hope we get to a world where liberals move on from their grating “representation” rhetoric.
“it is the norm.” No way, freak. Inverted people suffering STD’s are not the norm, since 51% of the people on earth are not inverted, do not have STD’s and are not freaks. Pixar and Disney are digging their graves.
I take it the rating is XXX.
Hunter Biden email to dad.
The Toy Story versions were fun. I remember seeing if Barbie was er anatomically correct by bending her in different poses.... er wait that was with a real woman I paid money for.
If “partners” are so important to the plot, where’s Buzz Light-years?
Groomers, are right. Spits!
I'll bet most of the country is as well, but they're too chicken to speak up.
I had scheduled to see this with the grandkids but cancelled because of this garbage. Sad because Buzz was my favorite character.
But why in the first place Disney? It’s because you wanted to make a statement, we get it, but you better leave the kids alone. Jus’ sayin.
With that “reasoning” practically anything goes.
And so it does.
Except the freedom to say “Stop!”.
Why parents allow this garbage to be shown to their children is baffling.
Democrat scum canceled John Lassiter so they could pervert Pixar.
“The controversy is whether or not you think it’s appropriate for people to love each other”
Loving each other is one thing, but displaying certain “acts of love” in pubic or in entertainment marketed to the public is what is offensive to me. Very offensive.
Still like Star Wars? Take Disney cruises? Make trips to Disneyland. Subscribe to Disney plus? You enable this. Case closed.
Disney has/had a special responsibility to not hurt children. Disney has failed and must be destroyed to send the clear message- never again.
Great way to kill a very anticipated movie.
I was going to see it until this nonsense.
Chris Evans believes that christian beliefs on homosexuality are wrong, and that it is his and Hollywood's job to change them in our next generation.
Parents, think about that.
Yep. Parents will send their kids to the drag queen story hour for free instead of paying for perversion.
“Disney is all in on burning down there own house, aren’t they !
Nope. White women eat this sh*t up. Traitors.”
Yep. Take a look at who is taking their kids to these transgender shows. White psychotic liberal women with a few cuck (or closet homosexual/pedophile) husbands.
