Maya Murmu, 70, was targeted by a wild elephant that [...]Ordinarily, I would have "flagged" that usage as an example of journalistic overreach and anthropomorphism - but in this case, it may have been justified.

The elephant is like the great white sharks in the many ‘Jaws’ movies that kept following the same family who for some inexplicable reason kept moving to one beach side home after another instead of moving inland.

She wasn't buried, she was placed on a funeral pyre. Elephants have the best sniffers bar none. They can smell underground water. I don't know if that has to do with it, but he apparently stayed in the area and did not like her or her scent. Maybe some abuse occurred in its past that she reminded him of. From
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/article/elephants-smell-quantity/ :
Elephant noses are sensitive enough to detect TNT, and distinguish between tribes of humans that have traditionally treated them well and groups that have acted aggressively. They even have the precision to discriminate between structurally similar molecules that are mirror images of each other—a subtle difference that would stump the schnozzes of humans and other primates.

When people think of elephants, their mind sees this:
What they'll get is this:
(hungry elephant looking for a snack)
Or this:
(Amorous elephant who needs glasses)

Dear Mr. Elephant, please tell us how you really feel. . .

So how do you piss off Ganesha?
“Did you lose some weight recently?”
“What sort of lotion do you use? Your skin is so soft and smooth!”

“but there are recorded events where the elephant thinks it is the person that abused it but gets it wrong.”
Yep, I’ve heard of that happening, i.e., elephants attacking people based on mistaken identity (some unfortunate soul who had the misfortune of resembling a person who’d abused an elephant or one of his family members).

"Then when the Lamb opened the fourth seal I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come!” So I looked and here came a pale green horse! The name of the one who rode it was Death, and Hades followed right behind. They were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill its population with the sword, famine, and disease,
and by the wild animals of the earth."
-- Rev. 6:7-8
Maybe this elephant incident should be considered a shot across the bow.
