Later snowpack melt means more water this summer

Western Washington’s cold and wet spring continues, as record amounts of rain and low temperatures contribute to high snowpack in north Puget Sound.

On June 7, snowpack levels reached 157% of normal in the Nooksack River basin, according to data available from the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service.

“We definitely are holding the snow up there,” said Scott Pattee, a water supply specialist at the USDA’s office in Mount Vernon. “It’s just the cold temperatures and the cool, wet weather we’ve seen this spring.”

Across the region, snowpack levels remain high late in the season, with the Olympic region reporting levels 538% of normal, and the Central Puget Sound region at 224% of normal on June 7.

The snowpack in Washington State continues to grow during our wet and cold Spring. In the last few days it has continues snowing in the mountains even with the snow level going up to 4500 ft... Our snow pack in Washington State is averaging 200% to over 500% in some areas. Our average temperatures according to our power bill has been 5 degrees less than last year for the past three months. Our average high temperatures have also been 5 degrees less than last year. We have also had record breaking amounts of rain for the past three months. Winter this year was no picnic either.

After past successes, my wife and my own efforts at gardening this year have been completely in vain. We have had infestations of horrible black aphids on our fruit trees and roses which have been difficult to control. And vegetables and berries - total bust so far.

Here is a link to the UD Department of Agriculture's Snowpack info.

People in northern Idaho and Spokane were complaining a week or so ago that it had not hit 70 degrees yet.
Much colder and wetter than normal. Must be climate change.

In 1979 I was unable to climb mount Raineer in a scheduled event at the end of May because so much snow had melted that the glaciers were too dangerous to cross. Global Warming my butt.

So heat and drought is global warming.
Cool and wet is global warming.

Yup. Soaking again today, flood warnings, more tomorrow. I can’t recall having to run the wood stove in June, at least not for a very long time. The lawns are untouchable jungles. When this stuff dries and the weather turns hot, look out.

No, that was in June of 1981... The Ingraham Glacier icefall fractured causing an avalanche that killed 11 people. A wall of ice 300 feet wide fell 800 feet and shattered which caused the avalanche.

If California had that water from Washington they’d make sure it’s diverted into the Pacific.

By the time you see the black or green aphids, it’s too late./. Spraying early with Sevin or insecticidal soap.

Use essential oils by adding half a dozen drops each of rosemary, thyme, peppermint and clove oils to a quart of water to make an excellent aphid killing, spider mite killer and repelling spray. As a bonus, you can also spray this on yourself to repel insects such as mosquitoes.

The temps and rain fall in Seattle have been cooler than normal and wetter than normal for more than three months.

It is June 13, and we have had just four days since Autumn 2021 that reached 70 degrees or higher - 70, 70, 72, and 73.

A couple days ago, I could see snow on the Cascade front range, which is definitely unusual for mid-June.

Our official temperature is recorded at SeaTac airport, so it is probably a couple degrees colder if your thermometer is not next to jet plane exhaust.

Whole upper West is like that.

Flew over Northern Cal/Nevada/Utah/Colorado a few days ago. All the mountains had persistent snowfields, some pretty extensive for June.

And it was snowing in MT/WY/CO under a really widespread system.

Interesting winter. Dumped big at the beginning, had a dry spot in the middle, and then made up for it with this late, extended wet spring/summer.

But we’re all gonna die, right?

Cowfarts and cars are killing us.

Sure.

Yep, it’s 38 degrees and pouring here in southwest MT mountains (after raining all weekend). Expecting snow tonight. Very wet spring.

Very true, look for a bad fire season late summer early fall all across the West. And then the pundits will be shouting climate change from every corner.
