My theory is that some cats know how to save their own lives by liking humans.

Happened to me once. A feral kitten popped out at an abandoned piece of property I was checking out.

It was meowing really loudly, and I thought it was hungry, so I tried to feed it some ham lunch meat.

It was more interested in being pals with me, and less in the ham. Even after several tries.

So, I couldn't just leave it, like I was going to do.

If it had been stand-offish, there it would have stayed, with lunch and dinner for a day.

Feral kitty was probably well-fed on little rodents already.
He/She just knew a likely sucker when it wandered by, and the prospect of endless free room and board.
