So did Republicans. Look up "Illinois Black codes" during Lincoln's time.

Just as bad if not worse than the Democrats. Illinois black codes allowed blacks to be sold into slavery, they prohibited black people from relocating to Illinois, and a whole host of other odious stipulations.

Other northern states also created horrible "black codes."

The Oregon Constitution, written in 1859, had such laws enshrined into it. The bulk of them, after many initiative petition attempts, were finally repealed in the 1930’s, but a decade or two ago there was another round to take care of portions that were overlooked the first time. IIRC—they still missed a few things even that round.
