A Californian is going viral after sharing the biggest culture shocks she faced after moving to Iowa.

The clip comes courtesy of Katie Bishop (@katphishhbishh), a podcaster and CRNA student now living in Iowa. Her video, about the most surprising differences between her old state and new one, now has over 800,000 views.

It’s the latest entry in a long line of posts about culture shocks TikTokers have faced after moving.

Ha ha! During 76-77 I met and dated several young women from Davenport, some I met at the discos (lol). Then met my bride across the river in Rock Island, and the vette never hauled another girl.

This farmboy drove my 74 vette to those city light nights.
Didn’t matter if it was snowing, blowing, and below zero.

Keeping livestock fountains flowing was the biggest headache in those brutal winters. Don’t miss those days.

Commuted year round on a Honda CM450, from the farm to a steel fabrication job, 16 miles away from 90 to 94. My motto was “if the road is bare, I’ll be there”. The longest that bike sat was 11 days. I dressed like I was riding a snowmobile. At least 4 times I rode by the bank sign in Monmouth,IL when it said 0° or lower.

I remember that map. It shows how they think, doesn’t it?

That’s like North Idaho. Everybody is kind, helpful, polite, and courteous. Well, almost everybody.

“Absent the government and the major cities, you’d be hard pressed to find a prettier state overall.”

I grew up in upstate NY - Utica, Ithaca, and Syracuse (only one year). We moved to St. Louis when I was 15. NYS was a wonderful place, especially the five years we spent in the Finger Lakes. But the government and flow of money to NYC from upstate are horrendous. The politics have driven so many industries out and it is very sad to see so much of the area become part of the Rust Belt.

I had a job offer from Corning when I was about 50 years old. The April day I visited there for the interview was a blizzard day! After having spent 35 years in balmy Northern California, I decided I couldn’t handle April blizzards.

So, when I was 65, we bought a second home upon retirement in North Idaho! But we were able to keep our Idaho house as a winter snowbird refuge.

A blizzard in Corning is actually a rarity, much less in April.

It may have been lake effect from Lake Erie. They are not at all in the right location for Lake Ontario lake effect, and are too far east and south for a nor’easter.

Interesting.

I would love to sometime drive out west and see your neck of the woods.

My Dad’s family landed in Ellis Island from Germany in October 1927. [...] Even then they could not stand living in NYC after coming from the sophisticated old European city of Danzig.

So, your father's family came from the Free City of Danzig (which, in 1927, was NOT part of Germany).

As seems to be the norm with most Republican Governors, and other government types, there seems to be this undying desire to flood their states with liberal tech people, as if they’re the only ones with money.

Des Moines is being transformed. Toss in the college towns and pretty soon, Iowa has a pretty sizable Democrat/Liberal population. As with so many other states, it only takes a few places, densely populated by liberals to change the whole complexion of the state. The Left may not control the state legislature or many of the counties, but their numbers will control the statewide offices of Governor, Lt Governor, AG, SecState.

I am from Minnesota and grew up less then 10 miles from Minneapolis. In the mid 80’s I was up in Brainerd which is north about 120 miles away.

I was there on a stop on the way to Backus and a lake cabin and walked up the sidewalk from a motel of someone we knew owned and saw a diner with all the teenagers in it. It was like Happy Days.

Further up the sidewalk was a strip joint which I guess was like Happy Ending for the older guys.....

You get away from the “Big City” and you discover it is different yet the same in some areas.

"I lived about half my life in Central NY and that is very true. The Finger Lakes area is rolling hills, dairy farms, apple orchards, and wine trails. The Adirondacks is pristine rugged mountains. The PA border area, the Southern Tier, is mountainous and breathtaking. In WNY, there is the Alleghany Park and ski resorts. It is also beautiful with vineyards south of Buffalo. Absent the government and the major cities, you’d be hard pressed to find a prettier state overall. Lots of variety in scenery and agricultrue. "

I was reading this and thinking of pinging you but then I saw it was you!

I hate stories about those filthy vermin moving out of kalifornia. It's why we've lost other beautiful states to cockroaches. Oregon. Washington. Colorado.

A friggin Greek tragedy.

Iowa doesn’t have a professional sports team because then Minnesota would want one.

This is how it starts.
“Like, I wish there were more foreign restaurants.”
“Like, there aren’t enough bike lanes.”
“Like, I wish there was more diversity.”
“Like, all my Californian friends just moved here and love how clean and safe it is.”
“Like, we all organized a “art hop” on Friday and love to hang out at the wine bar my other friend just opened.”
“Like, we all joined every civic group and got a new art installation downtown.”
“Like, we finally got all the city council and county commissioner positions filled by my friends from California.”
“Like, we finally got some diversity in town and we really need “affordable” housing for all the bums that showed up for our free food and housing programs,”
“Like, It is too dangerous and disgusting to live here. Like, my friend from California says Idaho is a great place to live. I am moving.”
