A starship crew in the 23rd century goes to investigate the silence of a distant planet's colony, only to find just two survivors, a powerful robot, and the deadly secret of a lost civilization.
The worst thing most fathers have to threaten their daughter’s boyfriend is a shotgun.
Forbidden Planet is a strong influence on the first Star Trek pilot, for certain.
It’s a loosely based retelling of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” through a SciFi lens.
And The Tempest is a retelling of the relief expedition sent to Jamestown. It wrecked due to a hurricane on the until then undiscovered Bermuda.
Robby stole the show. Ended up getting typecast, though.

You should have seen him
Lying alone in helpless silence in the night
You should have seen him
You would have seen his eye reflecting in the light
So for the old man
Ashes to ashes, earth to earth and dust to dust
No one will see me
No one with guilt to share, no secret soul to trust
And he won’t be found at all
Not a trace to mark his fall
Nor a stain upon the wall
Louder and louder
Till I could tell the sound was not within my ears
You should have seen me
You would have seen my eyes grow white and cold with fear
Heard all the things in Heaven and Earth
I’ve seen many things in Hell
But his vulture’s eye of a cold pale blue
Is the eye of the Devil himself
Take me away now
But let the silence drown the beating of his heart
I can’t go on
Let me be free from this guilty secret that I carry
Please set me free
Outstanding sound effects, from the landscape echoes to the monster’s bellows!!!
Thanks for the heads-up! Putting it on my calendar!
I was disappointed when I found out she was wearing a body suit. Kinda wrecked the illusion.🙁
Still a personal favorite. It doesn’t hurt seeing a young and gorgeous Ann Francis, but the story carries the day.
Great movie. I think I will pull out the DVD and watch it again tonight.
It is a simple morality tale, common to the 1950s, which is long before the moral decay of 1970s audiences that would tolerate anti-heroes. it is a simple good vs. evil story, with it all taking place in the mind of one man.
Each of us is capable or good and evil, even subconciously. We need to guard against our subconsious temptations.
It is especially meaningful today as our technology continues to rapidly outpace our moral decline.
“Lust in Spice”. lol
Lucky robot!
🤣
Leslie Nielsen was also the Captain, in the classic disaster movie, "The Poseidon Adventure".
“Ooh, Anne Francis......” [SaveFerris, post 6]
Anne Francis also co-starred in the TV series Riptide (1984-86), created by Stephen J Cannell (Rockford Files, A Team, Greatest American Hero, Hardcastle & McCormick, Black Sheep Squadron {aka Baa Baa Black Sheep}, Hunter, Silk Stalkings, The Commish), alongside Perry King, Joe Penny, Thom Bray, and Jack Ging.
30 years after Forbidden Planet, she was still extraordinarily attractive.
