I just moved to New Jersey from Alabama. Here’s what shocked me. (Spot the propaganda)

1. My new Boss So, there is clearly a hierarchy of hometown heroes, huh?.....

2. So long, southern drawl New Jerseyans speak so quickly, I’m being forced to recalibrate my brain. In Alabama, things are slower than molasses running uphill in winter.

3. Breakfast blunders Last week, I was having lunch with a new colleague. He asked me if I was familiar with Taylor ham. I asked, “Taylor who?” He about choked and fell off his chair! I guess I’ve got a lot of eating to do.

4. A place for all I appreciate the diversity I’ve found in New Jersey so far, which promotes acceptance and tolerance. Down in Alabama, suspicion of outsiders is common and on multiple occasions, I faced discrimination in the deep South. After all, I am a Muslim Arab, and according to a wide swath of public sentiment — driven by far too many misinformed media pundits — all Muslim Arabs are assumed to be terrorists. The assumption unfairly ignores the 1.7 billion Muslims who only desire love, peace, freedom and safety. Needless to say, I look forward to my new home in the Garden State, a much more colorful rainbow of humanity.

LOL.

I grew up in a crowded suburb outside of DC, though I’m from a Southern family and pretty friendly myself. But when I first drove into very rural areas and my boyfriend was waving at people on the street I asked, ‘You know all these people?’

In DC - which was really like a quiet Southern city when I was first growing up, especially in Summer - it’s mostly the Black folks who are careful to always say, ‘Good Morning’ or more usually, ‘How you doin’?’

Islam isn’t a race. Talking fast in the NJ/NY area is a form of courtesy and practicality.

It allows you to get your point across quickly so the other person can state theirs.

This ain’t “Bama. If you’ve got something to say spit it out.

But infinitely better. Better spice curing plus no gelatinous goop.

I lived there for 8 years and my wife was from there. She (and I) knew it as pork roll. We couldn’t find it out here and I finally did a search on alternate names for it. Taylor ham came up.

I told my wife. “You didn’t need to do a search, I could have told you that! But it’s pork roll, not Taylor ham!”

In my searches I found out that it was invented back in the late 1800’s. They first called it Taylor Ham, but seeing as it was processed meat the government told them they couldn’t call it ham! (Not sure when that happened - hard to believe the government was already concerned with stuff like that in 1890 or whenever.)

Taylor ham is used primarily in North Jersey, and pork roll in south.

Whatever name it is yummy.

I think it also has something to do with the original company’s trade mark. Other companies using “Taylor” would get nailed.

This is a very good comprehensive on this whole thing:

https://jerseyporkroll.com/pork-roll-history/

“Taylor is the brand name for pork roll made by Taylor Provisions, Inc., of Trenton.”

“The name debate seems to be between North Jersey locals calling it Taylor Ham, and South Jersey and Philadelphians calling it “Pork Roll.”

Maybe Middletown, NJ is the dividing line? “

“After all, I am a Muslim Arab”

Excellent reason to be suspicious of you.

Thanks for that link. Online I saw t-shirts for sale.

One pig is yelling “Pork Roll!” and the other pig is yelling “Taylor Ham!!”

With “Welcome to NJ” underneath.

I’ve never tried the stuff (though I’m no fan of Spam either). It looks as though Taylor’s Ham Roll is available online, but expensive, so I’ll probably live out my years without it.

Yeah seeing the online pricing does dampen my nostalgic taste buds. The taste is nothing like Spam but more on the order of Canadian bacon.

“I can say that I definitely agree that not all muslims are terrorists. Only some of them are. All of the rest of them provide money and support them and their cause but don’t actually pull the triggers.”

I agree with that statement 100%.

..."the 1.7 billion Muslims who only desire love, peace, freedom and safety." For Muslims of their own sect of Islam. Blow up Infidels or whichever of the three other sects are not your own (Sunni, Shia, Ahmadiyya, Ibadi) and they'll be cheering you on.
