Top Gun: Maverick has risked angering China by restoring the Taiwanese flag on the back of Tom Cruise's jacket in the new blockbuster.
In the original 1986 classic, Lieutenant Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell wears a leather bomber jacket featuring patches on the back, commemorating his father's battleship tours to Japan and Taiwan in 1963 to 1964.
But when the trailer for the highly-anticipated sequel was released in 2019, the flags had been mysteriously removed.
There was speculation the decision was influenced by Chinese film distributor and production company Tencent Pictures, who were part producing the aviation romp.
The flags had been replaced by random symbols in an apparent kowtow to the Communist nation's political demands.
But when the film was released this week, fans were relieved to see the flags had been restored, with one scene even featuring a close-up shot.

“I guess I’m in the minority....I hated that movie.”
Just asking..why?
Agree. But I understand I was’t the target audience, even back then.
And it’s only gotten worse.
See my post # 19
No offense to you personally my friend.
Ah Ok. No prob. I thought you were gonna whine why Kelly mCgillis wasn’t completely naked or something XD
Not quite timely... I was a "Green Striper;" enlisted PHAN to be exact, and even way before Top Gun, "massive ego" was universal.
As former flight deck personnel, always thought the intro to the original Top Gun was very, VERY well done.
I just watched the original recently (I have the 3D version!) and I still enjoyed it, even more so after watching this video by Ward Carroll (former Tomcat driver). LINK TO VIDEO: 21 Cringeworthy Errors in the Movie TOP GUN

But here are my favorites with the time into the movie where it occurs:
Anyway, Ward Carroll gave it a positive review: LINK TO VIDEO: Mooch's Review of TOP GUN MAVERICK
I haven't decided yet if I will see it or not.
HA!
Too much testosterone overload for me bro.
ALso at 5’ 7” it’s hard to take Tom cruise as a badass.....trust me....I KNOW. LOL!
He almost pulled it off in Jack Reacher......almost.
I considered the movie “Collateral” a comedy. Lol.
I watched the latest Top Gun on Imax this week. Worth the $$.
“I have heard it said more than once that while no pilots will admit to it “Top Gun” is one of their hokey “secret pleasures”
I believe it.....never live that down and would hear about it forever.
Kinda like nobody admits they like ABBA but many do. LOL!
That makes at least two of us
So true. When I was a teenager, as a guy, you couldn’t admit you liked the Carpenters...:)
Your Man-Card would be forcibly removed from your person.
Great movie! Go see it! On imax if you can.
When I was a kid the only time dudes were allowed to even suggest they liked the carpenters was during couples skate at the local roller rink.
Theres no question it was a pro-armed forces propaganda piece for us. lets just be honest. 1986, and ussr and china and norks and iran...
but it was hokey and parts were unbelievable.
Basically how a pilot who left top gun after gettin his WO killed, gets to come back and finish, then gets an elite deployment on a carrier who just happens to be in a conflict zone, and the first thing they do is send the brand new guy up over all other pilots onboard, and he somehow kills a bunch of bogeys and saves the best guy in the top gun class who also happens to be flying the other plane they sent up...?
I’m sure that the Flag has been changed on the Movie version that will be viewed in China. Its not that difficult today to insert different graphics on film.
Yep.
Reminds me of Days of Thunder.
Ironic cruise was in that one also.
As a Southerner that was an avid NASCAR fan at the time and I was actually in the infield the weekend they shot footage at Daytona and knowing what I did about the sport, that movie was a joke and an insult.
If it wasn’t for Robert Duval it woulda sucked entirely.
I mean if you dont think hard about it, most people can enjoy it
Its a classic 80s movie that owes quite a bit to montages to build it up and skip over time
But to me its like how most people wound up viewing Independence Day
Enjoyed it first, then thought about it, and realized what they pulled
First of all, in the Navy, they are Aviators. Pilots are people who guide ships into ports.
Naval fighter aviators and attack aviators always had really big egos. If you don’t, you are in the wrong business.
That is one of the reasons I found Chris Farley and David Spade singing “Superstar” in the movie “Tommy Boy” so hilarious...
When the song comes on as they drive down the road (after they had been fighting about what music to play “Superstar” comes on, and a both feign indifference, and then the scene immediate switches to both of them singing along lustily at the tops of of their voices as tears stream down their faces!
Captured it perfectly!
