Ah, the Monaco GP. I was in Monaco once, in 2008, but unfortunately it was two days AFTER the Grand Prix. Couldn’t help it with the way our schedule worked out, but it felt sort of like drawing the winning numbers for LAST week’s lottery. At least I now have an authentic 2008 Grand Prix of Monaco T-shirt. Yippee!
Would still love to be there for the race one day. At least we got to walk most of the circuit, which was cool, and we got at least a little sense of the race weekend atmosphere as the harbor was still full of super yachts, and it was obvious that many of the fans were still around town.

Attended the 24th Monaco Grand Prix on May 22, 1966. My Marine unit was deployed with the U.S. Navy 6th Fleet on a Med cruise and our ship was in Cannes for liberty. Took the train (about 35 miles) from Cannes to Monaco. That year the winner was Jackie Stewart BRM, Lorenzo Bandini (Ferrari) 2nd, and Graham Hill BRM 3rd. The following year Bandini died at the Monaco Grand Prix as a result of a fiery crash.
The 1966 Monaco Grand Prix was featured in the movie Grand Prix that was released in late 1966. The day I was there they were shooting crowd scenes from a helicopter ... other scenes were shot earlier in the week.

Wow, what a great story! I was born in 1963, so I remember Jackie Stewart mostly from his Indy car days. Remember watching him back then, before he became an announcer.
Even though I wasn’t quite there for the race, Monaco was interesting. I live in Colorado, so I’m very familiar with Vail, Aspen, and Telluride as our playgrounds of the rich and famous. But Monaco is like nowhere else in that regard, it’s like Vail-Aspen-Telluride times a hundred. I don’t think I’ve been anywhere else where I felt that I belonged there less. Reminders of insane wealth were around every corner. Even a sort of nondescript side entrance to a hotel we walked by had a window next to it with an incredible jewelry display in it.
I’m glad we went there, if for no other reason than to see it and say that we were there. I think one of the spots I enjoyed most, though, was the medieval village perched on a hilltop at Eze, between Monaco and Nice. That was amazing, with fantastic views of the Mediterranean. Extremely expensive, though, if you wanted to stay there.

Worked in northern Italy for a short time. Town called Monza. Blue collar town, loved it, the race track was across the street from the factory I was at. Workers would scale the track wall and watch practice on their lunch break.

The wealth on display during race week is incredibly hard to believe. We may personally know someone here in the USA who is ‘well established’ and will never have to worry about where their next meal is coming from but try to imagine someone who has several thousand times that money. They consider mere millionaires to be the lower class. Their WAGs make super models look plain. It is truly unbelievable.

The big race weekend F1, Indy 500 and the Coke 600... A novel idea, do all three instead of just the 500 and the 600...

Thanks, Chode.
It should be good fun but due to obligations I will not be able to view the race until Monday...But it’s a holiday and I’ll have a few beers while watching so the wait will be worth it.

When Jackie was racing for Ford Motor I bumped into him in the hallway
at North American Automotive Operations in Dearborn, he asked me where the elevators were so I took him there and as I recognized him as a race driver I had the wrong name, I called him Sterline Moss, and that didn’t go over very well.

A reminder that qualifying in Monaco is always on Friday so the Monegasques can go about their Saturday shopping without being disturbed by the roar of the engines.
