It’s clear Salvador Ramos was mentally sick, so why wasn’t he stopped?

This is a stupid question.
Do we really want a government that can put someone in jail because they think they MIGHT commit a crime?
What crimes had Ramos committed? Did they have evidence of a conspiracy to attack the school?
Maybe his family could have had Ramos committed? I don't know the mechanics of that; I just know it ain't easy.
The only real answer to this is to shoot back. And maybe wonder what we did to society over the last 60-60 years that causes it to produce people like Ramos.

With all these very clear and glaring warning signs, why wasn't this tragedy prevented?

Because cops and the FBI don't have the resources to be everywhere known mentally ill people happen to be. AND THE SCHOOL WAS A GUN FREE ZONE! So there were no people there who could prevent or stop this from happening AND THE SHOOTER KNEW IT! If there were designated, trained AND ARMED individuals on the faculty and/or staff on the premises and the fact was publicly known there is a very good chance this would not have happened and many innocent lives would have been saved.

Unless they commit a crime or an offense, nothing can be done at all.

Just because someone has mental health issues or displays signs of aggression does not mean they will kill a bunch of people.

Mental health is not a crime, nor is aggressive demeanor.

So, lets go back to focusing on the real problems as to why these kids do what they do!

Could a disturbed kid pretend to be gay or trans to avoid sorely needed scrutiny and intervention?

This is very true, you are on your own until something catastrophic happens.

They ignored it then bc:
-Not white
-Not straight
-Not religious

They ignore it now bc:
-Not white
-Not straight
-Not religious

Lefties immediately went into “he’s a victim too” mode as soon as it was discovered the killer was a tranny. Mental illness is the main characteristic of their followers.

That’s why.

The mentally ill were “mainstreamed” back into society beginning back in the 1950’s and I don’t see any movement to reverse this. If everyone that was wacky was institutionalized the streets would be empty.

“I believe they KNOW who every nut case around the country is.”

You lost me right there. Government might indeed be nefarious but they are also incompetent. If they don’t know half their employees are watching porn during office hours, then they certainly don’t know who every nut case in the country is.

My x bro in law 16 yr old son posted pics of himself holding guns threatening to kill another classmate. He was reported to the school. The school refuses to do anything. This was 2 weeks ago. Reported to police. Still nothing. This in a town of 1,500

It appears that if the school had locked the outside side door and the doors to all classrooms Ramos would have not gotten quick access to the children and might have been stopped.

At what point do we realize that “mentally ill” is now such a huge umbrella that it has lost all functional meaning or purpose.

Further - How have we so “evolved” to think that mental illness - in a day of more awareness and attempts to “help” than ever - is still an excuse for such abject evil?

“Feelings”
“Tone”
“Sensitivity”
“Tolerance”

All code words for “we refuse to hold people accountable”.

If someone is mentally ill - and poses a tangible danger to those around them - they should never be allowed around people they can harm. IF there is a way to treat/repair what is broken - then do that before any chance of them being around people they could hurt.

On the federal 4473, the form one signs when buying a gun from an FFL dealer para f. makes you swear you haven’t been “adjudicated mentally defective” or “been committed to a mental institution.”

This punk apparently hadn’t been either but the point is that every state in the union has provision to examine people who do stupid stuff, get them before a judge, and have them declared incompetent, etc. They DO NOT have to have done something legally criminal. But the folks around them have a responsibility to identify them and force the issue. This IS THE WAY we keep them from buying firearms , driving busses, becoming pharmacists, and a whole lot of other stuff. We have a nearby institution that is full of people who haven’t shot up a school but can’t be trusted to feed themselves. Many are in about the same shape as Ramos: they think they are someone else, say stupid stuff like “do you know who I am”, hurt themselves, and an endless string of anti social stuff.

At the same time we have to guard against the bitter ex-wife charge that a guy is “violent.” But we now have a way to handle that also.

The mentally I’ll are no longer locked up. You might get a three day hold but there are no long term facilities

You misspelled “politicians”.

There is a simple issue here that may well be irreconcilable under our legal system.

Unlike what you find in most countries in the world, U.S. law is built on two foundations: (1) presumed innocence, and (2) due process. In practical terms, what this means is that it is damn near impossible to deny any person of his rights until AFTER he is arrested, tried and convicted of a crime.

Two basic steps that could help mitigate -- but not prevent -- the impacts of lunatics on our society are:

1. Prosecute all crimes vigorously -- and evenhandedly. Getting people into the criminal justice system even for petty crimes makes it easier to treat them harshly when they become repeat offenders.

2. Stop this nonsense about sealing juvenile criminal records. If some stunted misfit was a violent criminal at the age of 14, you can be damn sure that he isn't likely to be a responsible adult when he turns 18.
