I saw the director's version of that DVD, and I was impressed that Ray Liotta was totally frank about his performance.

The commentary went to great lengths to describe the trouble they had trying to get the right-handed Liotta to play the role of the left-handed Joe Jackson. They finally gave up on it and filmed the movie with Joe Jackson as a righty.

He said if he could go back and do his career over again, he would have trained himself relentlessly to play a left-handed hitter in that movie. He always considered it a poor reflection on the work of a professional actor that he couldn't do that when it really mattered.

Gary Cooper had the same issue trying to play Lou Gehrig in Pride of the Yankees. The filmmakers simply reversed the image with a lot of close ups while Cooper was batting.
