I grew up on Chicago's Southside, a graduate of Morgan Park HS.
I'm returning to downtown Chicago after almost 5 years. What will I see? How safe is it? Can I walk safely down Rush street and Michigan Avenue at night, or do I take an Uber just to go three blocks.
Five years ago, you'd encounter a few homeless people sleeping in the street, and get hit on by a beggar or two, how is it now?
What kind of security downtown. Any festivals in Grant Park this weekend?
Thank you for the help.
It's going to be a nice, warm, sunny weekend here in the Chicago area, which means nice, warm evenings that are prime for shooting and killing.
My prediction: 30 shot, 10+ dead by midnight Sunday. And the liberal lamestream media will ignore it across the country, it'll only be "news" here in the Chicagoland area where people have become largely numb to what happens in the city.
Keep in mind, the three day weekend "clock" and counting shootings and murders starts 12:01am Friday morning and runs through 12am Monday morning. That's the time period for three day weekend shooting stats in Chicago. (NOT KIDDING.)
I’ll take some of that action.
I say 31s and 14d.
Any other takers?
I recommend air support. Keeps their heads down.

The only safe parts are the north loop up to Lincoln Park. Everywhere else is a hellscape
You can’t go home again
Remember to zig-zag when you walk.
It would be safer if you just flew to Paris and shouted that Mohammed is a pedophile.
Seriously, what you remember fondly in Chicago no longer exists.
Why endanger yourself to go look at the ashes?
No, if you do, don’t go carrying a Subway sandwich down the street. You might encounter white guys with ultra MAGA hats and nooses.
Was there for a few days in March. Stick to the Miracle Mile area and you’re fine.
I remember listening to the radio (WNOR?) while getting ready for school. I'd hear The Jackson Five, fiery accidents on the Dan Ryan and the latest Mob hits. Those were the good old days!
The Parthenon went out of business. Greektown isn’t the same now.
Depends greatly on the area.
I say don’t let the thugs win. Let’s take back the city.
Eight of us walked to and from a Cubs Nite Game on Apr 20th (this year) we even stopped off at the Club Holiday, danced until after midnight and walked the rest of the mile back to my daughter’s condo in Uptown. Felt completely safe.
Were we?
I don’t know but it was a great evening even though the Cubs lost :/

You clearly missed all the carjackings and the shootings that started earlier this month...
Just a few weeks ago, we were headed for the UP of Michigan and had to travel through Chicago. Usually we take 94 through the middle to avoid the tolls and so we did. Unfortunately, after we had passed the point of no return, there was an accident that blocked 94 so we had to get off in South Chicago on the surface streets. Looked like bombed-out Beirut. I told the kids to look around, they would never see this again as I would not go back this direction ever. Just when I told them to look around, we came upon a homicide scene and had to drive within a couple feet of a dead body with blood seeping through in several places. Homicide unit and many other law enforcement were there. I understand this is not a rarity, but for rural Hoosiers, this was awful. I forget what street we ultimately ended up on, but that was my anecdotal story from several weeks ago.
If you're white, you're operating on a level of assumption there which belies common sense.
If you're in Chicago alone and must walk at night, go to the nearest bar, befriend the largest white guys - college age would be best - and offer them all the cash in your wallet to walk you back to the hotel. You've already expressed a willingness to lose $200; what's your life worth?
All that you can do if Chicago is an unavoidable trip is just manage the risk, and that means using your brain.
Best of luck. (no sarcasm)
LOL, right? See my comment.
