Mark Felt was a bitter cork soaker for being passed over for head of the FBI.

Mark Felt may have been a source for Woodward and Bernstein, but he was not capable of knowing and leaking things happening in the White House. Woodward was a former naval intelligence officer who wound up working in the White House. He was known to have briefed Gen. Al Haig there. Haig is the most likely person to have been the "Deep Throat", and they all lied to cover up for him. Felt is just the patsy, named after he was senile and couldn't remember, let alone talk about, anything.

The question is qui bono? Who benefited from Watergate? Who benefited from removing V.P. Agnew? In the short term, the answer was Gerald Ford, who served as an unelected president for the remainder of Nixon's second term. In the long term, I think the answer is George H. W. Bush, who cleared out quite a few prominent Republicans ahead of him in his climb to win the presidency, and then engineer his son's tarnished election as well.
