California had it’s own secession movement(Jefferson) in the 30’s. Pearl Harbor put the kibosh on it. 51 states is a non-starter even if the Democrats wish to do it with D.C. and Puerto Rico.

This is not about creating new states, but about reorganizing the current states. At this point in history we are where the US was during the time of the Missouri Compromise: we can't create a single new blue or red state, but we might be able to create two new states if one is blue and the other red.
But Greater Idaho would add zero new states. It would polarize things more, but more US citizens would be in states closer to their political and social/cultural views.

I'd prefer to see the southern and eastern counties in Oregon team up with the northern California counties to form a new state of Jefferson even if it is a longer shot than the eastern counties of Oregon joining Idaho.
An even better prospect might be for eastern Washington to join with eastern and southern Oregon and leave two rumps in western Washington and northwest Oregon.
