COVID-19 infections have surged in Connecticut, pushing the state to claim one of the highest rates of new cases in the country this week, data shows.
The number of new cases per person over the previous seven days in Connecticut was the highest in the country on Monday and the second highest on both Tuesday and Wednesday, according to data The New York Times collects from state and local health agencies.
There were 74 new cases reported per 100,000 residents in Connecticut during the seven-day stretch ending Wednesday, which was more than double the nationwide average, according to the most recent data available Thursday evening.
Meanwhile, hospitalizations and deaths in Connecticut have also risen in recent weeks, but both measures, as well as new cases, remain well below the most dramatic peaks seen in earlier stretches during the pandemic.

Florida for some time now has been one of those states with delayed reporting.
Excess Deaths right now for nearly all age groups are floating along just above the normal daily death average of 2016-2019. Probably consistent with the 250-300 Covid death count present now.
Several countries are being hit hard. Australia in particular, where it is winter. You could wipe it out in the US and countries like this serve as a reservoir to restart it as immunity fades.
The next surge won’t be pretty.
Connecticut and/or Worldometer came up with a new way to get statistics to lie. They used to report cases daily, but switched to less frequent reporting. If you look at the default graph of cases, it looks like the cases have really surged. If you ask for the seven day average, the surge is much more subdued.
