I have worked and paid taxes for well over 52 years and need no lectures about how I’m robbing your pockets. I have enough money to take care of my people for as long as necessary. I brought them all of the way here on my own dime. I am rather taken aback at all of the derisory and unkind commentary from people who should know better

I got attacked by a Ukraine partisan on a thread that I posted about vote fraud that was totally unrelated to the feud, so I know how you feel. Hang in there and keep fighting the bureaucracy.   

I've used my congressmen - both state and local - as go-tos to light a fire under the bureaucrats.

State services are paid for by state tax payers and only avail to state citizens

States get federal dollars to help fund "state" services. Handouts such as food stamps, housing, etc. are federal programs overseen by the states. So, no, these programs are not funded solely by the taxpayers in the given state.

You need to consult an immigration attorney. Your wife is most likely eligible to adjust her status to permanent resident (green card), but there are some technicalities (how long after entry on a tourist visa is permissible, etc).

For the others, even if it was allowed, it isn't as simple as just going to Social Security. They need to be on a status that permits work, and they need to obtain an EAD (employment authorization document) from USCIS (immigration), which they can use to get an SSN.

They obviously presented at a border crossing and requested asylum or humanitarian status. If you are inspected by a border agent and admitted, you are not an illegal alien. Period.

We tried to go that route to waive my husband’s special visa. INS didn’t care and didn’t budge at the time. But that was in the 90’s. Different time.

There is a wide gulf between "illegal alien" and "legal immigrant". Each of these terms has a very exact and specific legal meaning.

Illegal alien means a person present on US soil without a valid immigration status. Illegal aliens have two major classes: inspected and uninspected. Inspected illegal aliens are people who overstayed their status (e.g. entered legally, had a status, but let it expire and didn't leave). Uninspected are the people who jump the border and get in without presenting to any officer.

Legal immigrants are holders of an immigration visa or a green card (these two are one and the same, legally). These people are considered US persons, and can do pretty much everything except vote and serve in certain sensitive government positions.

Between these classes are a wide range of legal statuses, including various types of parole, nonimmigrant visas, temporary protected status, asylum seeker (in process), etc. None of the people entering from Mexico passing a legal inspection station are illegal aliens. They might become so if they abuse the status they are granted, but many will not.

BTW, if you know my history you will know I am definitely not one to defend anything just because it is marked Ukranian...but I do tend to err on the side of allowing people from a dangerous place to come to the USA, especially if they have family or friends willing to host/sponsor them.
