DODGEVILLE, Wis. — A jury has found an Iowa County mother and daughter not guilty in the death of a teenager under their care in 2018.

Laurie and Alexis Barry were each charged with one count of first-degree reckless homicide as a party to a crime in the death of 13-year-old Selah Kaden, who was living in the Barry home when she died in May 2018. Kaden was sent to live with the Barrys in Mineral Point by her parents, who live in North Carolina, due to behavioral problems she was having at home.

The Barrys say Kaden had been “fake-fainting” as part of her acting out and had been intentionally falling down the stairs. They said on the day Kaden had died, they thought she was again faking an injury before they realized something was wrong. Prosecutors argued that was not consistent with the injuries Kaden suffered, with a forensic pathologist testifying they thought she died from suffocation and a patterned beating with blunt force, and also believed more than one person was involved in her death.

Defense attorneys for the Barrys argued prosecutors failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the injuries were the result of abuse or that the Barrys had a role in Kaden’s death.

Jurors received the case just after noon on Tuesday after the prosecution and defense made their closing arguments following a week-long trial. The verdict came just before 8 p.m. Tuesday, a little less than eight hours after the jury got the case.

First MURDER trial in our County in ages. HUGE surprise that they were found Not Guilty. The Prosecutor did a terrible job, so that was a big part of it. Their lives are ruined either way. Public Opinion is that they DID kill the girl, but a Jury of their Peers said, 'Nope!'

We have juries for a reason.

The old “geographic cure” rarely works for behavioral problems.

I agree. Also beware the "Let me send my problem child to live with you" gambit.

Not sure I wholly agree. Being sent to the family farm to work (seriously work) for the Summer was effective for many. I will concede that it's a low percentage gamble, especially if it's merely a change of scenery.

“Kaden had been “fake-fainting” as part of her acting out and had been intentionally falling down the stairs.”
........

I’ve seen a child do that, then accuse her father of kicking her in the ribs with steel toe boots on a daily basis. She actually did it one time in front of a police officer who reported she was faking.

Repeated trauma really screws up a child’s mind. This girl was being abused by her mother for years, which the girl couldn’t grasp, so she tried to transfer abuser status to the father. It’s satanic.

I’m with you as far as farm work helping some, though not all. Beau was a Foster Parent for many years. 14 TEENAGERS have been through this farm, mostly boys as Beau is a stellar Male Role Model which none of them had growing up. (This was when his first wife was still alive.)

Of the 14, ONE Foster Son has pretty much been ‘saved’ and is basically a functional member of society. He is the only one that keeps in touch and still goes to Beau for guidance at age 40. He is a HUGE help to us with home projects and the like. He’s very good mechanically and with painting, flooring, etc. which is what he does for a living.

The others? Incarcerated or dead. :(

You can’t save them all, but you can sometimes save one! :)
