Using anti-inflammatory drugs and steroids to relieve pain could increase chances of developing chronic pain, according to researchers. Their research puts into question conventional practices used to alleviate pain. Normal recovery from a painful injury involves inflammation and blocking that inflammation with drugs could lead to harder-to-treat pain.
"For many decades it's been standard medical practice to treat pain with anti-inflammatory drugs. But we found that this short-term fix could lead to longer-term problems," says Jeffrey Mogil.
The researchers examined the mechanisms of pain in both humans and mice. They found that neutrophils—a type of white blood cell that helps the body fight infection—play a key role in resolving pain.
"In analyzing the genes of people suffering from lower back pain, we observed active changes in genes over time in people whose pain went away. Changes in the blood cells and their activity seemed to be the most important factor," says Luda Diatchenko.
"Neutrophils dominate the early stages of inflammation and set the stage for repair of tissue damage. Inflammation occurs for a reason, and it looks like it's dangerous to interfere with it," says Professor Mogil.
Experimentally blocking neutrophils in mice prolonged the pain up to ten times the normal duration. Treating the pain with anti-inflammatory drugs and steroids like dexamethasone and diclofenac also produced the same result, although they were effective against pain early on.
These findings are also supported by a separate analysis that showed that those taking anti-inflammatory drugs to treat their pain were more likely to have pain two to ten years later, an effect not seen in people taking acetaminophen or anti-depressants.
"Our findings suggest it may be time to reconsider the way we treat acute pain. Luckily pain can be killed in other ways that don't involve interfering with inflammation," says Massimo Allegri.

Where are all these doctors prescribing all of the pain killers that are so evil? I want to know because I NEVER got pain killers when I had a gout attack! Millions of dollars of research and development to make pain killers non addictive and you can’t get them when you need them. Unless you’re in a car accident! What a joke!
/s
pffft, go get fentynal and heroin in the streets, kill yourself but a person with chronic pain and they try giving you weak muscle relaxants and SSRI?SNRI’s...because your depressed?
No one is dying on vicodin and Percocet because you can’t get it anymore.
some inflammation
too much inflammation leads to problems
The DEA has put so much pressure and fear into our drs, that they are scared to prescribe pain meds. Now patients are suffering.
It’s ridiculous how far It has gone.
There are reports of people turning to the streets looking for substances because they are in severe pain and looking for relief. Then they get a hold of laced drugs and/or OD on heroin. I blame the DEA for going overboard on drs.
Me too but the DEA is following order and the Border Patrol has been demonized. We need(NEED) politics out of medicine. This can be assuaged simply by letting doctors be doctors without the over watch.
This.😞
Exactly.
That doesn’t do those of us that can’t walk any good.
Inflammation can also delay healing.
A friend had back surgery and didn’t want to take pain meds. Her doctor chewed her out and said that he didn’t care how much she wanted to suffer, she wasn’t going to heal unless she got the inflammation down because inflamed tissue does not heal.
And acetaminophen can destroy your liver. It’s not as safe as they’d like you to believe.
FWIW, if someone needs pain relief, ice packs are way underrated and underutilized. When I had my MRSA infection, which hurt like hell, my bp was too low for strong pain killers, which would drop it even more, so I was left with ice packs, which worked amazingly well.
Reducing inflammation often does reduce pain, too, as inflammation can cause pain.
I was having rotator cuff problems. My arm hurt almost constantly but not enough for surgery. Even I could guess that and I didn’t want the surgery anyways.
I asked about PT and my dr thought it would help.
It beyond helped. I went for a few months, regularly did the PT at home, and am completely pain free now. It worked wonders.
1000 MG of turmeric and ginger root in my green tea helps me a lot.
...inflamed tissue does not heal.

The axiom I was taught was “Inflammation in the first stage of healing.”
You are right about ice, even tho that particular protocol was changed not too long ago. Best to keep ice for the 1st 72 hours or less and switch to contrast, which alternates ice with heat (ice for shorter time than heat).
Turmeric, which is anti-inflammatory, will relieve soft tissue pain caused by generalized (not infectious or post-surgical trauma) inflammation.
...gout attack...

My husband has obtained some relief during a gout attack with Chancre Piedra, aka: stonebreaker. I believe it comes from Peru and is used for kidney stones. A friend has used it for that with good results. It also relieves gallstone or bile sludge pain (personal anecdote). It works for gout by dissolving or at least softening the painful uric acid crystals in the joint.
cold laser therapy can help reduce pain and inflammation
and promote healing too
tart cherry helps with gout
most berries do
