And what is unfortunately ALSO true is there are political conservatives *within* the GOP, including some FReepers, who argue to this day that "Catholics ain't Christians" -- only "born again" fundamentalist protestants "count" as Christian in their eyes. They see devout Christians on the court like Alito and Thomas as being no different than Buddhists.
