Winning the Kentucky Derby as an 80-1 underdog is fantastic. On Saturday, Rich Strike showed he knows how to do that.
Now, winning with grace, that’s something he needs to learn.
Moments after completing one of the most improbable wins in the history of horse racing or sports in general, Rich Strike immediately tried to bite another horse.

“Rich Strike immediately tried to bite another horse.”
Sounds like a real testy fighter type. Maybe he was jacked up up on something... :)
Thinking the same thing
Is there such a thing as horse roid rage? :)
In the video he seems extra hyper or maybe the excitement gets to him? Maybe he’s like “I won bitches”
The horse is very clearly biting at the reigns of the other horse not the horse itself. Something aint right though for sure.
Horses bite.
What’s the big news.
If the horse’s behavior was so inappropriate, why didn’t the riders try to separate the horses?
He was going after the mane. The reigns were just in the way. This is what they do when they want to mount. In other words, he’s horny.
I heard some idiot yelling that Rich Strike didn’t belong on a racetrack. Maybe that guy should stop betting on the wrong horse and tone down his apparent disdain for this particular one. How can you blame a stallion for doing what stallions do which is to react to anything they view as a challenge?
I understand that outriders have a job to do, but it was mentioned that Rich Strike calmed down as soon as he saw his groom. Sounds as though, if possible, grooms should accompany the outriders, at least for the younger, inexperienced horses like RS.
Yesterday I watched an interview with the trainer who explained what was going on.
According to the trainer, given the history of the horse and the races he had run in, he was not use to a cool down horse approaching him after the race since he had not experienced this before.
The horse was still in race mode and considered the horse a competitor when it approached after race and though it was another horse that needed to be beaten.
Basically the reaction of Rich Strike was because he was in a situation he had never been in before and reacted.
This according to the trainer.
Here’s the interview, the explanation is around the 3:45 mark of the video.

Some horses are just bad actors, testosterone can make them crazy to the point they can’t be trained. That is why most male horses are gelded.
Unlike other horse breeds, Thoroughbreds are not disciplined. Back when I used to work in the horse industry (standardbreds), the old saying was: “If a standardbred kicks you, or lunges at you, you discipline him and correct the behaviour. If a thoroughbred kicks you, you just stand there and smile.”
That’s what I was thinking of.
He apparently comes from biters on one side of his lineage. I finally watched the race, an aerial view of it. Just wow. It was like watching Dave Wottle win the 800 meter race in the ‘72 Olympics. He was in the back of the pack for the first 500m, and then he started passing everyone, including the favorite, as if they were running in slow motion.
“an aerial view of it”
Where’s that link?
Rich Strike was not “woke”
I’m not a horse person, but that makes perfect sense.
It’s the same reason why cars built specifically for racing don’t work well for hauling groceries from the supermarket. Back in the 20s and 30s, Bugatti called their sporting and racing cars “pur-sang” models, which is French for “pure blood”, equivalent to “thoroughbred”.
