I have many EGO tools, love them. With 2 chargers and 4 batteries (various sizes) I can charge 2 while working using the other 2. I can work perpetually.
For me, it’s all about if the utilization meets the application. For general tools they work fine for me. I’m not sure if $7K and <2hours of time is enough for some, especially without spare batteries - and these are large and will be expensive to have spares on hand. Although if you do have spares, it’s no different than having to top up a gas tank in the middle of the job.
Husqvarna makes one.
I am so frustrated with modern small engines…I find them to be difficult to impossible to start. I just bought a Simpson power washer with a CRX engine. Brand new out of the box with fresh True Fuel. It started on the second pull, ran for two minutes, and just quit. It never got going again. I called Simpson “support” and the woman was totally useless. She actually recommended taking it to a repair shop!
I took it back to Lowe’s yesterday, 24 hours after buying it, and they gave me a refund inside two minutes, no questions or objections. Well, they did complain that the gas tank was full and they can’t take gas equipment back with gas in the tank! I see their point, but I asked the clerk “How can I run it dry if it won’t run at all?”
My Husqvarna gas mower starts very easily—every time.
I am into my third year with an EGO electric push lawn mower. It is an extremely well designed machine that functions equal to or better than the Briggs powered mowers I have owned over decades.
The mower is very quiet
Once started down the battery powered path , I collected two EGO blowers, and a string trimmer. I also bought a SloJo small battery powered cultivator.
Life free from insidious two cycle engines is fantastic.
Some here like to whine about electric car disruption but EGO has destroyed the market for gas engines. Everybody in the business has followed the EGO lead
Hat tip to Elsa?
I can usually keep them running for years, but the carb needs to be cleaned or replaced every few years.
Mostly it’s the ethanol in the gas that causes problems both with clogging fuel venturi and corrosion. I buy Honda or Honda design rip-offs and starting is never an issue.
Briggs are junk, most if not all the returns at the big box stores have Briggs engines.
Isn’t there a fuel line coming out the bottom of the tank you can disconnect and drain the gas into a container?
HA!
We had a Sunbeam electric (corded) mower in the late sixties.
I hated it and envied my friends with gas mowers.
And my sister DID run over the cord...and we never let her forget it!
Ok, this post isn’t for everyone but...
These battery packs typically use cells that are one out of just a handful of generic cell types. The cells are spot tack welded together by nickel strips. You can buy a light duty tack spot welder on Amazon for as little as $40. You can buy the nickel strips for $5. The cells can be bought on the cheap from various places. ebike hobbyists (like me) use these things all the time to make their own custom battery packs. So if you are a cheapskate, this is a way to cut down on the cost of batteries, especially if only one cell has gone bad in a pack.
endless-sphere.com is the go to site for this info.
Using a lawn mower with a 110 volt cord on wet grass seems on the same level as using a toaster while in the bathtub.
My dad is very similar.
Way more yard than I care to take care of.
We have the Ego line, as well, and I continue to marvel at how truly effective it is at everything.
It is as good, or better, than gas for mowing, edging, trimming, and blowing, and the chain saw can really do a job for a super low price, too. It handled our tree and all the cutting down with no hesitation.
Buying the added tools is cheap when you already have the batteries.
Probably, but I was not aware of their policy when I hauled it back to the store. I learned about it when I was talking to the refund clerk. She graciously took it back.
For $7000 the thing better mow the yard itself. I want to hang on the deck drinking beer and BBQing as it unlocks itself, mows the yard, trims, and weedeats, pickup up the leaves, and then puts itself back in the shed and plugs itself in.
have a tad less than a half acre.
I went Ryobi electric everything. Riding mower\self-propelled walk behind mower\weedwacker\pole saw\chain saw\blower\hand tools etc...all in all they are ok.
snowblower, based on reviews, doesn’t seem ready for prime-time
Oh yes...... I bought the chainsaw as well but haven’t actually used it much yet.
Having cussed chainsaw two cycle engines for literally decades, the fantastic push a button start and run is miraculous
For the record....... Briggs and Stratton is doomed as their market is evaporating as gas engines are obsoleted
I’m still running a SEARS Craftsman 42” deck mower with a Kohler 12.5 HP engine that I bought in 1994. It looks newer than most of the machines I see in my subdivision, runs better and performs better... Why? I clean it after every use. I KNOW how to repair it and when something isn’t right I fix it.
This winter, my truck battery failed after 5 years and I’d parked right up on a Holly tree/bush so that the hood couldn’t open. My neighbor took me to get a replacement battery and told me he and I (72 and 82) could just push the truck up the small incline to clear it so I could open the hood. I said “Screw that.” I then went and got my mower and dug out the tow chains from my truck and I hooked it up. Pulled that truck out from the bush like butter, the old hydraulic transmission in the mower still had plenty of pull..... my neighbor was shocked. :0)
Pop Mech has become a woke Gen young rag.
I spend 4 hours mowing with mt 72” , 40 hp, Kubota F3680. It sips diesel.
Hope I can keep it.
