The fastest times ever recorded in each Triple Crown race:
All set by Secretariat at the 1973 Triple Crown.
Kentucky Derby: 1:59 2/5
Preakness Stakes: 1:53
Belmont Stakes: 2:24
Of all of Secretariat’s memorable Triple Crown finishes, the Belmont is as much the best as Big Red was that day, when he finished 31 lengths - nearly the length of a football field - in front of his rivals. The dramatic distance between Secretariat and the rest of the field underscores how magical the race was to watch. But even more so is how Secretariat gradually opened up that lead. Announcer Chic Anderson’s call of the race captured it perfectly. “On the turn, it’s Secretariat. It looks like he’s opening. The lead is increasing. It’s three, three-and-a-half.” At a mile he was seven lengths ahead. With a quarter mile to go he was 20 lengths ahead. He seemed to glide forward effortlessly and the other horses appeared frozen in time.
“Secretariat is widening now. He is moving like a tremendous machine.”
Any questions?

Great movie.
Thanks.
Dear Lord what a Magnificent creature he was! Watching him run was a religious experience!
Greater book.
.
Our middle daughter did an extensive report on Secretariat when she was in fifth or sixth grade around 2000. Mom even sewed her a jockey’s outfit to wear when she gave her oral report to the class.
In honour of his Canadian trainer and jockey Secretariat ran his final race at Woodbine Toronto in the Canadian International in the fall of that year 1973. The horse naturally won. A multitude of betting slips placed on him to win were never cashed.
Were Secretariat a human today, he would be consistently denied promotion.
He would be deemed “difficult to work with,”
“Representing privilege,”
He would grow depressed, lost.
A buddy of mine helped take care of Big Red in retirement.
Always proud, sensitive, an individual.
Got a huge laugh at that video someone put together showing Secretariat running the full race in less time than some wretched bazeball game took between pitches.
Well, humans today are idiots.
I was driving to the Gulf for a vacation and was listening to the Belmont on the car radio. I could not believe my ears when the announcing continued to increase the lead - freaking amazing...on the radio, too!
Been there once in 1971. What an event!!!
Lol!!!!!!!
If I had bet it would be $20 to win on Epicenter, Messier, Taiba & Zandon…$80 bucks one and done to pick up some small change… maybe a tank of gas.
I love love horses. They are magnificent animals and that is one reason why the Lord Christ said I will return riding a white horse. They’re awesome animals. Powerful and beautiful. Riding a horse is in my Bucket list before God calls me home.
You should definitely have that experience. I learned to ride when I was 10 years old.
