City College of San Francisco's Board of Trustees finalized 38 faculty layoffs to address a looming budget deficit during a special meeting, Friday night. Another 12 faculty are retiring and won't be replaced.
But that may not be the full count of teachers dropped by the school: at least 150 part-timers may not be hired back to the college as part of a state mechanism that mandates part-timers not take the place of laid-off full time faculty, the teachers' union says.
And while those aren't technically layoffs themselves, those teachers will be out of a job all the same. Many have worked at the college for years, and for some, decades.
All week, faculty and student supporters tried to hold back the tidal wave of layoffs: on Sunday City College of San Francisco faculty marched for May Day, on Tuesday they camped in tents in front of their administration's offices, and on Thursday, 10 protesters were arrested after blocking a street.

Editorial: How bad was the financial aid fraud at California’s community colleges? We still don’t know, and that’s a problem!
Forty-four schools haven’t reported monthly findings on fake students to the chancellor’s office.(Los Angeles Times)

It’s not the fault of California’s community colleges that fraudsters filed thousands of fake student applications, many through bots, early during the pandemic. At least 65,000 of them included documents requesting financial aid as federal relief money flowed to colleges. At the time, campuses were closed, classes were held online, and administrators were hectically trying to keep the colleges operating.
Once the deception was uncovered last fall, the state’s 116 community colleges had an obligation to help document the extent of the problem. But 44 have failed to report their monthly findings on fake applications to the chancellor’s office of the California Community Colleges, including all nine of the campuses of the Los Angeles Community College District.
In addition, 15% of community colleges haven’t filed even their preliminary enrollment surveys for the current academic year.

But what do you think the chances of that happening are in San FranSICKO?

"More than 360 faculty tuned in to the virtual City College of San Francisco Board of Trustees meeting Friday afternoon, including Denise Selleck, who has taught English as Second Language classes at the college since 1991. Those classes primarily serve San Francisco's many immigrant communities.City College's woes began during its 2013 accreditation crisis — which infamously threatened its closure — and sent its enrollment into a spiral from which it never fully recovered, teachers say.
The layoffs follow various faculty rallies over the last week, including the arrest of ten faculty members at City College of San Francisco Thursday evening by San Francisco police during a protest against the layoffs at CCSF's Ocean campus, according to AFT Local 2121, the union that represents CCSF faculty."
SCHADENFREUDE! SCHADENFREUDE! SCHADENFREUDE!
gotta pay for all those illegals somehow...

One wonders if the first 'person' sitting down might actually be laying a SanFran dookie in the street, as is the custom there. Perhaps not involved in the protest at all! L.O.F.L.
Something does not add up. Newsom’s Democrats claim that California has a huge budget surplus. City of San Francisco College is about as Marxist and Leftist as you might imagine. The people they are laying off are core leftist Newsom people. Mildly surprised that if this Democrat stronghold is really flush with cash, they are not helping their comrades.
There’s plenty of hamburger flipping jobs available. I did it. You learn work ethic. It comes in handy in the real world.
