A 'hero' Russian world champion in an international tank warfare competition was killed when he was sent by Vladimir Putin into a real battle in Ukraine.
Bato Basanov, 25, from Buryatia, was in a record-breaking tank biathlon team that performed last year in war games in front of defence minister Sergei Shoigu and chief of the army general staff Valery Gerasimov.
But his conflict ended in death when his tank was hit in Ukraine.

Yeah, I want the Russians to get smashed, but celebrating the death of an individual soldier is different.
Abrams won’t go too far in Eastern Europe due to poor terrain and enormous weight. And it blow up just as good as any other tank when hit from above.
Dailymail is high level larping. It’s like Weekly World News coverage of Roswell.
“Have you seen The Pentagon Wars?”
Yes. But remember they had to make it funny, entertaining and dramatic. That all required so much exaggeration that little of what we saw was “real.” Nobody is, for example, going to cheat on a fire test. If they got caught, they’d go to prison.
I agree.
The Russkie military, with all its bluster, isn’t as elite as once thought.Keep them body bags coming.
I liken this to the aces at the target range. They have the best weapons, perfectly clean, excellent working order and can shoot a knat off of a fly’s rear end at 500 yards.
But when the target shoots back, mother nature and fear set in. All that perfect shooting turns into spray and pray, or hiding, or running.
With regards to this Russian tank ace, the war games he was good at probably never had drones or hand held anti-tank weapons attacking him.
Nonetheless, RIP.
I truly think that the Battle Tank and conventional Aircraft Carrier are both obsolete in modern technology warfare.
Orc’s tank cutting edges have lost 2 prototype tanks and a tank ‘ace’ who got aced.
If aces get aced, then its easy to see why tankers would rather destroy their own tanks rather than face actual warfare where artillery strikes from nowhere blow them up real good.
“but celebrating the death of an individual soldier is different.”
True, but considering the murders of innocent women and children by Russki soldiers, does not generate much sympathy.
Oh! The drama. There is nothing that they print that you won’t believe. Even after you have been provably lied to repeatedly. Yet you dance, no questions asked, on every piece of propaganda they print. You should be embarrassed.
>>> I’d like to see a Ukraine battalion of US style armored Calvary equipped with Abrams go up against Russian armored units.
The Russians would NEVER SEE the Abrams as they take out every single one of them.
If we paraded tanks into battle like they do, we would lose them all too.
Yep. One would think that the two wholesale slaughters of the twentieth century would have taught us something. I think about that when I walk past my little town’s Vietnam Memorial, and read the stories of the seven young men — nineteen or twenty years old—who didn’t come home.
The aircraft carrier and other surface ships are OK so long as they stay hundreds of miles offshore.
There is a tanker Chieftain video who tells the story of 20 Merkavas going up against the latest Orc ATM in huge ambush. Only one tank was lost, and one tank was hit 11 times.
He also makes the point that not one Merkava thought to pop smoke.
Intelligence and bravery are of negative value in the general population as far as governments are concerned. They prefer stupid and cowardly as the prefered traits in the perfect citizen.
Karl Walled was funnier.

The 64th has been pulled and is thought to be back inside Orc Land.

I really like Chieftain’s work. I saw that video. The Merkava is probably one of the best tanks in the world and it is optimized for its environment. (As opposed to most US designs that have to perform equally well in all environments. That means more compromises when compared to something like the Merkava.) I think he made the point that probably none of the missiles were as good as what we’re giving the Ukrainians. Also, the British/Swedish system is even better. But his point about other failures is valid too. A tank without significant infantry and air cover to at least the range of current missiles is very vulnerable. The conclusion is, it’s not what you have but how you use it.
