The chip shortage that ravaged the auto industry last year continues to terrorize vehicle production in 2022. BMW switched chip suppliers to keep production rolling, but the new semiconductors weren’t fully functional, lacking Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. These made their way into new vehicles, but owners will receive an update with the features.
BMW told Automotive News Europe that it would install the software features via an over-the-air update by the end of June. The chips also lack wi-fi capability. According to the publication, BMW didn’t specify the number of affected models or disclose where they were shipped. However, ANE discovered owners on forums from the US, France, Italy, and more with cars lacking the infotainment tech.
This isn’t new territory for BMW. In November of last year, the chip shortage forced the company to drop touchscreen functionality in models like the 3 Series, 4 Series, Z4, and several crossovers. It’s just not touchscreens and tech that are being affected, either. Earlier this week, Mini announced that it would stop building models with manual gearboxes because it simplifies its lineup with the ongoing semiconductor shortage and supply chain issues.
It’s unclear when the chip shortage and supply chain issues will resolve themselves. In September, BMW and Mercedes predicted that the chip shortage could last until 2023 or later. The disruption has driven up new car prices, and the pair might not be eager to lower them once chip supplies normalize. But that doesn’t appear to be happening anytime soon.

My local Mexi restaurant makes fresh chips several times every day, and their own salsa too.
My bud here in Beverly Hills Mercedes Benz told me this year, MOST options are off the table when they buy 2022’s.
and I went to a Ford dealership, the Super Duty 2022’s which I want for our office CANNOT BE ORDERED. Period. Supply chain issues. The dealership got the memo from Ford HQ weeks ago to stop taking pre-orders. Imagine that. Ford refusing to take your money..
Car dealer lots around me (Indiana) look super sparse. Most inventory is used cars. Chrysler/Jeep/Ram guy looks like he’s closed for vacation. Ford guy has a few new vehicles, but it’s a big store, used to have hundreds.
Why do cars have to have all of that crap?
I lost my backup alarms due to chip shortages 🤪
The horror
‘85 Grand Wagoneer, no chips
It enables me to display phone apps on the vehicle screen.
8 track or cassette player, all the way, baby!!!
Lemme stop at the gas station and buy a road map, too!!
Never used to have this crap on cars. If you wanted it, you could get AC, other than that, you had a little handle that rolled down the window...also a wing window. The controls for the heater and AC were so simple that anyone with a little bit of mechanical skill could fix-just a nob and some cables.
Change your own spark plugs-try that with new cars these days. Could do complete tune ups with just a few wrenches.
The radio was simple to operate.
All this crap and it all goes to hell costing THOUSANDS of dollars to repair..if you can repair it.
I just replaced a thermostat housing on my little pick up. PLASTIC! The GD thing is PLASTIC! Has several hoses running out of it where before, the thermostat housing had just ONE running out of it.
I am with you all the way!
I wonder what the cost would be if they built a car-like my 63 chev bel air with the 230 peanut six in it with three on the tree.
24 MPG and it would run all day at 75MPH. Heck, a 283 or 327 would get over 20 MPG. When you wanted to get around a car you stomped on it and held on.
They could gear them up to run at around 2 thousand RPM and extend the life of the engines.
The Horror!
No Apple thing to play Barry Manilow?
Damn! That’s almost as bad as my Peloton bike being delayed. Life has gotten raw and brutal.
That must be somehow related to their $3 billion loss on their EV gamble.
it allows your apps to run through the car, or a good chunk of them
So people are driving around in their $100K Beemers with a two buck Arduino hack!
Got a new BMW 5 series and it came with android auto. I can e no use fir it so I disbled it and connect to my phone with a plain BT connection. Why would I want to mirror my phone’s screen on my car when it already has NAV, Sirius, spotify, etc built in?
