I’m full time salaried with plenty of experience in the IBM midrange arena. I *could* retire and probably do very well consulting if I were motivated to do so.

I may give it a try. I’m tired of the 8 to 5 gig.

If you can start collecting retirement DO IT and ‘double dip’ by becoming a contractor.

After having 4 different bosses and regional HQ in 3 years, having my division sold, having rumors spread about me by one outgoing manager above me whom I clashed with (A eurotrash leftist who shortly after I left was fired for groping 3 different female employees) - I quite big corporate life to start my own business 15 years ago. Best decision I ever made

I retired a couple of years early in 2019. I was worried that I didn't have enough saved to last us to the end. Now that it has been a couple of years, I can tell you this. Retirement is much, much cheaper then I thought. Inflation has a very muted effect on retires, and a stock-market crash is only a problem if you need the money now. Look at places like The Villages in Florida, where everyday is full and fun. I waited too long to retire.

I retired last September at 67. My advice, for whatever it is worth....if you are financially set....Do It Now.

8 to 5? What a charmed life. 55 to 80 hour weeks is the norm on my projects. I just hit 30 years with my current employer and age 65 last year. Dec 31, 2022 marks the "max social security" date for me. In my salary range, I need to be careful to end my "fiscal" year on Dec 31. A couple paychecks into January, and my tax bracket would make a lesser income taxed to the point of being pointless.

I'm not anxious to retire, but at some point I will get tired of the endless death marches. I suspect the government will become insolvent and cease being able to fund my contracts well before I opt to make a disciplined exit from the workforce.
