JonBenet Ramsey's father unveils petition pressing Colorado governor to advance daughter's murder case

FIRST ON FOX: LAS VEGAS - John Ramsey, the father of murdered JonBenet Ramsey, on Saturday announced the start of a petition asking Colorado Gov. Jared Polis to allow an independent agency to conduct DNA testing in the case rather than the Boulder Police Department (BPD).

"It's a petition to hopefully get the state of Colorado to intervene and have the items from the crime scene that could be tested for DNA that haven't been tested," Ramsey told Fox News Digital at the CrimeCon 2022 convention in Las Vegas on Saturday. "It's going to take a lot of help to get that moving again. But, you know, the government is very reactive, and we're talking about politicians, and we want them to do the right thing."

If Colorado officials "know there's enough people behind" the petition "asking them to do the right thing, they'll do it," Ramsey said.

"It's a cold case, and they don't call it a cold case, but it is for all intents and purposes a cold case," Ramsey said. "Why they won't test the DNA samples that should be tested for DNA, I don't know. It's baffling."

JonBenet's mother reported her missing to police when she was 6 years old on the morning Dec. 26, 1996, after finding a lengthy ransom note demanding more than $118,000 in exchange for JonBenet. John Ramsey found her body later that same day in the basement of her home.

An autopsy revealed that JonBenet died of strangulation and a blow to the head. The Boulder City Medical Examiner reported an 8 1/2-inch fracture on her skull. Authorities have not convicted any suspects in the case.

Hard to believe it’s been nearly 26 years since that poor little girl was murdered.

I have NEVER understood why there would be resistance to testing DNA when they have samples in hand. Whether to try to find the perp that committed crimes like this OR to set free people in jail that didn’t do it

Is there anyone suspected of the murder? I thought
perhaps that the son might have done it. Anybody reading
this thread have any ideas about who did it?

IIRC the rasome note mentioned a sum of money which was *exactly* the same odd amount that he had recently recieved from his employer as a bonus.Someone in that household at least *knows* who did it...and I wouldn't bet a nickel against someone *in* the household having done it.

That girl was paraded around stages nationwide with an inch of makeup on her and thousands in fake diamonds on her.A five year old girl dressed up like a high class hooker.I'd wager every nickel I have that someone was molesting that girl and,in order to prevent her from saying anything,he killed her.

Geeze...I've gotta stop watching The Crime Channel!

Anyone opposing DNA testing is hiding something!

That’s the last thing I heard about it, that maybe her own brother did it out of jealousy over all the attention she got. Dunno.

No, the family was cleared by the DNA tests available then. But nowadays, there are much more sophisticated tests.

Detective Steve Thomas’s book convinced me that someone in the family did it or knew who did it, and that Patsy wrote that ransom note.

That’s what I always thought. My theory was that the brother did it, purposefully or accidentally, but that the parents or mom panicked to cover it up in order to protect the kid and their public facade. My sister was a state and national pageant winner and the mindset can be very destructive.

That idiot. The brother did it and the father covered it up. Patsy went along lest she lose her other kid too.

“Small foreign faction” my ass. And they wrote the long ransom note once they got in the house. Stashed the body in the basement instead of carrying her little carcass away to maybe actually collect that ransom?

They think we are idiots. This could only come out of Boulder.

I don’t know about Ramsey today but one from the 1990s was rich enough to pay for the DNA testing himself. The main reason why there’s no DNA testing in most cases is the expense. Also, ins some cases, they fear that if the sample is quite small, it will be used up by the testing and then there’s no way to test it later.

Most jurisdictions, however, will gladly allow for the testing if somebody besides them pays for the test.

I agree with those who say someone in the family either was the killer or knew the killer. The fact that such a long ransom note was composed on a pad that was known to be inside the home made me sure the culprit was very comfortable being inside the house or else he would have fled at first chance after the murder.

Get Mark Furman on the case. He solved the Martha Moxley case...even arranged it so a Kennedy did 11 years in The Big House...maximum security.

Some people at work probably knew the figure, too. . . and maybe some other friends and family if it was mentioned. Not just the household.

I really doubt the 9 year old affixed his mind to that particular amount of money.

For some reason, I thought that both of the girl’s parents had passed.

Lou Smit, a detective from Colorado (he also worked with Joe Kenda from Homicide Hunter) came out of retirement to work on this case. He has an excellent track record, even solved the murder of Kelsey Grammer’s sister. He proved there is evidence of an intruder who came in through the basement window, plus much more. Maybe one day her killer will be revealed through DNA. I hope so. Poor little girl.
