The original poster stated in relation to Russia,it’s colonial empire building has been going on for a millenia. So the past was brought up and so pointing out Europeans were also building colonialist empires in that timefrane are valid. Perhaps you’d care to point out why Russia’s empire building was less civilising than say Spain’s. Hmmmm. Baring in mind that natives of nth, central and sth America have Siberian roots. Did they do any better than Russia’s ‘natives’?
I think that it's an unproductive distraction to waste time discussing the inhumane colonial practices of the imperial powers of the 19th century (or earlier).
We are, instead, attempting to assess the moral - but also realpolitische - aspects of Russia's current behavior.
