Watching St. Elmo's Fire now, I would say that is in the middle.

I can’t even think of a bad movie in the 80’s. It was a great decade for movies.
To: DallasBiff
Back to the Future, Empire Strikes Back, Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop (1984), Top Gun, Witness, Working Girl, Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Gorky Park, Mississippi Burning, and Die Hard would be among my nominees for the best.
Howard the Duck, Beverly Hills Cop 2, Dead Poets Society are among the disappointments.

I don’t know if it’s the best or the worst, but “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” is the defining movie of the 1980s.

I’m going to go with “Chariots of Fire” as the best movie of the 1980s. Great storyline, outstanding acting, and wonderful character development.

"Silverado" (1988) - Lawrence Kasdan isn't John Ford by any stretch but still . . . .
"Tom Horn" (1980) The redoubtable Steve McQueen in is final film - naturally, playing the dark anti hero in a "true" story

I would say no one can remember the worst movies. That is their nature.

Thinking not about movies released in the 1980s but about movies that captured the 1980s: Weird Science
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
One Crazy Summer
Better Off Dead
Police Academy
Ferris Beuller's Day Off
Goonies
Red Dawn
Wargames
Back to the Future
Footloose
The Lost Boys

I wouldnt know, I was already boycotting hollyweird by that time.

Both Airplane movies
Fast Times
Breakfast Club
I’m Gonna Git You Sucka
all epitomized the 1980’s.

Also worth mentioning in the “best” or “better” category The Natural, Field of Dreams, No Way Out, Good Morning Vietnam, Tin Men, When Harry Met Sally, Hannah and Her Sisters, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Broadway Danny Rose.
Wonder if the “Donald Trump lotto” comment in Lethal Weapon 2 would generate plenty of laughs in a revival theatre these days?

The James Bond franchise was best with For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, and The Living Daylights but “turkeyed” with View To A Kill.
The Star Trek franchise was best with The Search for Spock and The Voyage Home but sucked with The Final Frontier.
