For once, this is not a joke: Who is buried in Grant’s tomb?

A general who doesn’t have the Army’s highest rank. Not yet, anyway.

Fans of Ulysses S. Grant are campaigning for a promotion that would elevate Grant to a rank held by only two other former generals, George Washington and the World War I hero John J. Pershing — general of the armies of the United States, above even five-star generals.

Grant was the best General on either side when it came to organization and logistics. He was a quartermaster in the Mexican American war and he put that experience to good use. The first thing he did when put in charge at Chattanooga was to break the siege and reestablish supply lines.

He did once he accepted Lee’s surrender.

The war was over at that moment, so not really. Now if he rallied Lee's troops afterwards to kill those pesky Souix, maybe.

Then GEN Pershing did not rate the rank as he was so honored by Congress after WW1 was over.

I once saw a bumper sticker that said:
“CUSTER HAD IT COMING!” Based upon what I’ve heard as to Custer’s attitude, and his treatment of subordinates and other folks; He probably did!

For those not inclined to reading print, Grant’s memoirs can be heard on youtube. I don’t have a link but I listened to it some time ago.

I hope it’s a slap in the face to the cancel culture. They wanted to tear down everything Grant because his wife’s family owned slaves.

No individual could without a reliance on expert staff work. Grant had that. Several of his contemporaries relied on a more ad hoc approach.

Was watching an interesting show on Discovery yesterday, "How Booze Built America" with Mike Rowe.

When Mike covered the Civil War, he talked about Grant. Most of the stories about Grant's alcoholism were spread by those in the Army who hated him. True, he had a problem early in life with booze, but by the time of the Civil War he'd gotten it (mostly) under control.

Another thing I didn't know was that Grant was very thinly built. Rowe said that he was only about 140 pounds - which may have contributed to Grant's inability to handle alcohol.
