I wondered how many eventually died not knowing the war was over.
Scattered Apache depredations reputedly lasted until 1924 in the southwesf and 1933 in Mexico. I wouldn’t fully trust some of those areas to this day.

Think about it - the commander ordered this guy to stay behind, than had to be dragged down there 30 years later to countermand the order.
Onoda should have been able to get 30 years of azz-kicking on that guy for leaving him behind.
